WHEELER CORRECTIONAL FACILITY
WHEELER COUNTY, GEORGIA
PRIVATE PRISON

ADDRESS:
1100 NORTH BROAD STREET
ALAMO, GA 30411

TEL: (912)568-1731

The Georgia Department of Corrections has contracted with Cornell Corrections and Corrections Corporation of America to operate three private prisons located throughout the state. D. Ray James Prison located in Folkston, Georgia is operated by Cornell Corrections. Coffee Correctional Institute located in Nicholls, Georgia and Wheeler Correctional Institute located in Alamo, Georgia are operated by Corrections Corporation of America.

The Department has assigned a team of specialists to monitor the daily operation of each of the three private facilities and ensure that the terms of the contracts are being met. Employees at the facilities include security personnel (certified by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council), counselors, program specialists and support staff. Programming for inmate vocational, educational and substance abuse treatment closely follow the standards found in state-operated facilities.

Hi Lynn my boyfriend/finace is also at Wheeler but ,from things he has said, there are inmates at this facility with all different sentence lengths. He is only there through December 22nd but he actually started out at Gwinnett County on June 1st, then went to Coastal on July 17th, and then on to Wheeler August 23rd. This is my first time of having someone close to me in jail so I am still learning things but if there is ever anything I can help you out with just let me know. Take Care!!

Welcome to PTO and the Georgia board. I also have a loved one at Wheeler and will be glad to answer any questions you might have. As far as when he will be reviewed well the parole board and DOC move at their own pace and you will have to be patient. He should here something in a month or so though. In the meantime write the board and tell them what his release address would be, if he has a job see if you can get a letter to that effect. Just take it one day at a time and take a lot of deep breaths.

My son is at Wheeler. His profile does not show credit for his jail time. Whose responsibility is it to fix this?

noname10
12-09-2007, 03:42 PM
He probably needs to talk to his counselor and have them get with records to check on dates. Was he held on any type of probation violation or other charges that were dropped before is conviction? A lot of times if he had misdemenors that were sentenced to time served the the DOC does not allow that to count toward the state time. Just giving a few possibilities, or sometimes human error is involved so tell him to keep after the counselor, most of the time they will not discuss this with anyone other than the inmate so he will have to handle the paperwork.

shaunsgrl0130

also get past the idea of "who's responsibility is it?" the doc and the parole board will make it very clear that NOTHING is their responsibility and that you are just as much at fault as your loved one who is locked up. we are all dirt under their feet in their eyes so they are not "responsible" to any of us for anything in their minds.

My son has been sent to Wheeler and I can't find any informatio online concerning care packages, vistation, basically ANYTHING! We have never been in this situation before, so I'm a true "newbie." He is having trouble getting this information as well. What can families do and not do? What does TPM stand for? I'd really be grateful for any help from anyone familiar with this facility. We are a 7 hour drive from him in TN. I would hate to go down there and then not be able to visit him. PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks in advance for ANY help at all!

KCB- I had a friend who did a few years down at Wheeler. You're not going to find this information on the web site- because Georgia's just really behind in technology stuff. The best way to get information is to either write your son and have him find out the answers from his counselor (they'll give him this info during orientation/ classification) or call down there as speak to his counselor yourself. Most of the administrative staffers are really helpful in cases like this... good luck!!

my husband is at wheeler and global tel link is the service provider for their collect calls. Here's their phone number 1-800-231-0193 .also i know that your loved one has to attempt to call before the account can be set-up. Hopefully this helps you. Feel free to ask any more questions you may have.

yes i use them, they told me that at first but then they checked again and set up the account. Make sure you set it up where they bill you directly and not a prepaid account. You get more calls when they bill you even though your limit will be $100.

I am interested in some information too. I am from Germany and I found out, that my stepbrother is there since January. We have lost contact for over about 14 years.
As in Germany everything is a little bit different I don`t know anything about the prison-system in the states. For example: how does it work with having a telephone call to him in wheelers? Maybe you can discribe it very detailed?
Thanks in advance for your help!!!

he has to add your name and number to his call list and then you must set up a account with a company called GTL their telephone number is (1-800)231-0193. They will tell you what you will need to do after that.

I do know that Wheeler is a medium security and that a majority of the inmates are not there that long, not all but the majority. It is located about 2 1/2 hours away from atlanta and if you want to go visit you will need to call first to see which visitation time your loved one is on. There are two the first is fom 830am-130pm and the second is 2:30p-7:30p. Hope that helps with your question. If you need more information, let me know

You may have the info on Wheeler by now, but I can tell you to send money I have sent either a money order or cashier's check in mail to my son and it is put on his account. I believe all mail is opened, but be sure to mention in your letter how much you're putting on his account. Never had a problem, just a personal safety idea.
Call ahead for visitation hours and when you can attend. You can take up to $10 in quarters in a plastic baggie for vending machines in visiting room. Only you can go over to machines.
Hope that helps.

Anyone familiar with Terrell Co.? My son just transferred there.

My fiance was just transferred to Wheeler Corr. Facility from Calhoun State Prison a couple of weeks ago. He says it's a nicer location than Calhoun. They get 3 hot meals, they have A/C, Flat screen televisions, etc., I haven't heard that it is a short term facility, but I do know that it is one of 3 private prisons in the State of GA.

Thanks for responding! My husband seems to like it better! I hope this move was a good move as the atmosphere is totally different at Wheeler than anywhere he has been! But, we hope we are on the last leg of our journey with this move! Who knows? I have been to visitation 4 times already and we havent had any issues. I do have a missing money order that I have to call about today though! His mom's money order was mailed on a Saturday and was posted to his account on that Monday, but I have one that is now a week old that I am getting worried about! But, it will turn up!

cooleysgirl--No problem. My fiance seems to like it better as well. When he was at Calhoun State Prison in Morgan, GA, they didn't have A/C; he was sweating constantly, the people there were rude. He said the entire prison was ghetto and no one had any professionalism about themselves; even the counselors. I hope this is our last stop as well. We should have a TPM soon, my fiance said sometime in September...I sure hope so. The wait is driving me crazy. Every time I look it up online it always says "No Decision"... How was visitation, if you don't mind me asking--is it laid back, or is it. I haven't been yet, and I plan on going this weekend. My fiance gave me 2 diff times. He didn't say that he was on a certain time, though. I guess I should just call up there and see which time he is on. I sent a money order out on Thursday; and my fiance got his Saturday. I know sometimes they get backed up in the mail room and there may be a delay in getting the mail...I'm sure it will turn up soon.

Thanks! It turned up today after I called! Visitation is laid back there. We havent had any problems at visitation and everyone seems to be nice there. I will be there this weekend. I am not sure what day I will be going yet. Do you know what unit he is in? Visitation is specific to what unit he is in and it changes every 90 days. For example, the unit my husband is in has visitation now on Saturdays from 830-130 and on Sunday from 230-730. In October, his unit will change to 230-730 on Saturday and 830-130 on Sunday. Where are you driving from?

I'm glad they found it! When my fiance wrote me, he told me that his visitation is 830-130 on Saturdays and 230-730 on Sunday; so your husband and my fiance are on the same unit. I want to go Saturday morning because I hate driving those back roads at night. I'm coming from Southeast Georgia (Tifton, GA to be exact) and Alamo, GA is about 1.5 hours from here. Not a long drive at all. Where are you driving from?

Hi Vanity21..welcome!

Your hubby has to put you on the list in order for you to be approved for visitation. The phone number to Wheeler is 912-568-1731. Call them and tell them that who your call is in reference to (your hubby), give them his GDC ID#, if you know if, and they should be able to transfer you to the correct counselor; the counselor will be able to let you know if you're on the visitation list--if not, he/she will give you specific instructions on what you need to do to get on the list. They are really friendly people; they're nothing like the state-prisons. They're nice and family-oriented. I hope this helps! Good Luck!

I was just there sunday and asked that same question and was told to ask the counselor and or the chaplain.

About wedding ceremonies.

my fiance has been there for a while and we are also in the process of getting ready to get married. he was told that i had to write the warden for permission. I had to tell the wardne why is it that i wanted to marry him and how it would benefit instead of hinder his progress. We were approved and i had to wait for a call from the chaplain to see what all i needed to do. He has to start the process by talking to the chaplain himself and then you can go from there. It is very rarely that the warden will deny a request for marriage, you then have to go to the city hall office in wheeler and apply for a marriage license and then bring it to the chaplain for him to give your loved one to sign. It is a processes but you will then be given a date to come with your witness for the ceremony.

Trese11
02-25-2011, 10:06 PM
Did you have to write the warden first, before you received the marriage application? I havent been able to get in contact with the chaplain and my boyfriend still hasnt received a application for us to get married from him either.

Poohbear2910
03-08-2011, 10:52 AM
I would go ahead and write the warden, just to get the ball rolling! Also, have your fiancee request a meeting with the chaplain and he can get what he needs from him! Hope you get your answers soon!!

Hi Hizrideordie,

Welcome to PTO and the GA forum. For you to visit, your man has to send you a significant other form that you have to return to the prison. He can get the form from his counselor. To send him money you can do it online through J-Pay or send a money order to Atlanta. The GA DOC website has instructions on both methods.

Poohbear2910
03-25-2011, 08:12 AM
Hi! Welcome to the forum! He will need to send you a visitor form to fill out and you will need to fill it out and send it back to the counselor. The information should be on the form when he mails it to you. Also, since Wheeler is a private prison, you actually have to send a money order to the prison and not to Atlanta. JPay also doesnt service Wheeler since it is a private prison. The money order should be made out to your loved one and be sure to include their GDC number beside his name. The money order will need to be mailed to Wheeler Correctional Facility, PO Box 466, Alamo, GA 30411. BE sure to address the envelope with his first name and GDC number on the top line and then Wheeler Corr Facility on the second line. If you have any other questions, please let me know and I will be glad to help you. My husband has been at Wheeler since last year.

I'm not for sure how long it will take there, my boyfriend is at Wheeler but was transferred there from another facility and so his visitation list followed him. But I can tell you the mail room there is very slow for incoming and outgoing mail. Especially incoming. Just be patient and hope you get approved soon.

This whole thread/forum has been very helpful to me. I wasn't aware that I would need to fill out so much information just to visit, however. Wow. Sounds like a lot but I definitely want to make it happen. My boyfriend in Wheeler said that I could send him typed letters, which is awesome, but let me also ask--can we send decorative envelopes like with a design PRINTED onto them? I know how those places are about stickers etc, but hope this will be different.
Also, can I get more info on visitation? Do you just sit in a waiting room the whole time or can you go somewhere else? Is brief hugging or kissing allowed and do they remain cuffed? Are we face to face without like a glass window etc? Sorry, I only know what I see from TV and books.

my husband was there a whole year. They just moved him 2 weeks ago.as far as typed letter, yes you can do that because at times i have typed my husband his letter and he got them...for visitation ur boyfriend needs to send you a "significant other form" you go fill out and get a copy of birth certificate, social, and license, and take it to get notarized and you send it back. As far as envelope ive never sent "decrotive" ones or ones with stickers so im not sure if u can get them...visitation there is very laid back depends on whos working that shift...you get too sit in front of each other with a small table between you you can hug and kiss when they come in..you have to stay in visitation room you cant leave unless to go to bathroom...sometimes you can hold hands depends whos working..if you bring money it has to be in see through zip lock back it can only be in change like quarters the maxium amount you can take is $20 you must be on his list to nsee him if not they will turn you around...please wear clothing with sleeves, nothing low cut, nothing to tight, you will have to take off shoes when going in so they can scan them...and you go through medal detector...dont come in with bubble gum or lip balm or nothing, no cameras or cell phones nothing...when you get there in visitation youll be seated before he comes in...and depending what visitation time ur on if you dont get there before a certain time they start count meaning youd prolly be waiting 1 hour hour and half tops for him if you come during count cause they want let him out...hope this was helpful!!!!

My son was recently sent to Wheeler from Jackson. He's serving 3 consecutive 5 yr terms, starting this month. He sat at Cobb for a year, where I was able to send money orders and call the jail for information if need be, but the GA DOC is a whole 'nother ball game, and one that will NEVER be in my favor. As if Cobb had been.

Anyone else have a loved one still there? His latest letter states the a/c is not working, so I was distressed to hear that. I used to live in Atlanta a million lifetimes ago, and I left EXACTLY because I hated the summers so much.

Does anyone know if Jpay is REALLY the only way to get him money as of August 2013? A lot of the information I have found on this thread is fairly old. I know there have been changes going on.

And honestly? As a mom? Is this an ok place to be? I'm in the middle of the country, finishing up my last year of school, broke and worried. I wish I could do more, but a)he's an adult and b)well, I'm *poor*! My "free" time is spent worrying about school.

Ok, just had to get that off my chest. I really am wondering what I can do to help out and just COPE with all the changes since he was sentenced.

tx!

Hi my husband was there back in January of 2011 he stayed there a year..It was good I never had any problems at all. Because it was a CCA Prison I was able to send the money to the actual prison its self..how ever from my knowledge its been turned into a maximum security prison from what I'm told..But I would call and double check if I was you..Its hard the first year but as long as you have the right support you will be OK.

HA! Someone would have to actually answer the phone

I thought it was minimum security; my son's crime is first time non violent, so I thought that fit.

Thanks - school has started for me, so my attention is somewhat scattered. His latest letter is quite downcast; he still hasn't accepted the fact that he's been convicted and sentenced. Do you know at what point a possible parole date might be set?
