Unique Programs

My Child & I: The program is designed to further increase an offender's awareness of responsibility to the family with positive nurturing and interaction. Approximately 30 inmates go through a screening process and attend parenting skills' classes prior to the event. Volunteers from Marion Correctional Institution and outside organizations and churches assist in numerous areas during the program. The families are able to play games, produce a family video, decide on choices of about 10 crafts to make, read to each other or listen to the storyteller, experience the adventures of C.O.S.I., pet and hold animals from the Wildlife Center and MCI farm. Each family receives a birthday cake and ice cream along with a birthday goodie bag to celebrate birthdays missed. The program has been very successful and well received by the inmates and their families.
Life Line is a program provided to prepare inmates for a successful reentry to their community. Life Line is an industrial computer training program for residents aimed at providing exposure to computers and technology. The program serves up to 900 men annually.
Horizon Inter-Faith: This is the first interfaith residential program opened in a correctional institution. MCI Muslim, Jewish, and Christian inmates live together in a dormitory and participate in programs designed to deepen their chosen faith commitment while becoming more knowledgeable of other faiths. Volunteers participate in the program on Monday and Tuesday evenings.
Prison News Network (PNN): PNN is involved with producing many video programs at MCI and utilizes digital cameras and equipment with the capability of producing professional quality videos. PNN focuses on inmate programs, training videos for departments, community service projects, and special projects for the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
" A Better Way" is a program directed and intended to guide troubled youth to an awareness of the choices and decisions they make in their lives, and the potential consequences of those choices. We currently provide this program at the Marion County Juvenile Correctional Facility.
ADAPT (Assistance with Discovering Alternative Problem-Solutions Together) is a voluntary process available to inmates involved in a dispute to discuss and explore problem solutions.
Fathers Reaching Out is a program designed to build upon and enhance relationships between incarcerated fathers and their children by providing educationally based interactive learning materials for incarcerated fathers.
