Description: The Alabama Women's Resource Network offers an array of services to women in prison in Alabama, as well as families of both male and female prisoners.

Please visit AWRN's website to find out more. Here is a brief overview:

Parole Preparation Workshops for Women Prisoners at Birmingham Work Release

• Empower women to understand the parole process, plan for and meet their reentry needs, and advocate for their parole by presenting their accomplishments in prison and plans for reentry to the Parole Board in letter form (by mail).
• Empower women to make community connections with loved ones and/or practitioners pre-release so as to alleviate potential reentry obstacles.
• Increase ex-offenders’ safety by reducing recidivism
• Increase prisoners’ understanding of services offered (especially transitional housing)

Family Reunification and Parole Preparation Workshops

AWRN has launched an ongoing From Prison to Parole Workshop series that is open to the public and that provides information on topic areas identified in ongoing concert with prisoners, ex-offenders, family members of prisoners, and practitioners.

The current workshop series offered statewide is the Family Reunification and Parole Preparation Workshop. Guidebooks for families unable to attend the workshop will go on sale at awrn.org in spring 2011.

AWRN Parole Advocacy Team

As part of our mission, AWRN launched the Parole Advocacy Program in 2009. Prisoners do not appear at their parole hearings, but individuals may speak before the Parole Board on a prisoner’s behalf. AWRN Parole Team Advocates provide two services: (1) advocates help incarcerated women develop reentry plans, and (2) advocates appear at parole hearings to advocate for the woman’s release based on community resources available for their clients, their clients’ personal growth while in prison, and personal testimonies of those who have offered to serve as mentors and providers to their clients.

Comprehensive training is provided for Advocates, detailing how their skills can be used to help women prepare for parole. All Advocates work on a volunteer basis and AWRN keeps track of Advocates’ expenses and experiences in the form of a detailed exit memo. Exit memos allow AWRN to make targeted changes to the Program.
