Description: Children of Promise, NYCis a Brooklyn based organization committed to embracing and empowering children of incarcerated parents to break the cycle of intergenerational involvement in the criminal system. CPNYC’s mission is to provide children of prisoners with the guidance, support and the opportunities necessary to effectively develop leadership skills, form positive social relationships and enhance academic performance. Implementing the principles and best practices of youth development, this innovative after-school program infuses a mental health model. Mental health based intervention allows CPNYC to acknowledge the traumas children of prisoners experience and to address the problems and challenges at the root, allowing young people to create new behaviors, new habits and new reactions. It also allows staff to understand the sources of negative and inappropriate conduct and model appropriate behaviors and reactions.

The program serves children ages 5-18. The staff ratio averages 3 participants to one adult. Group size is capped at 15. The facilities are beautiful, the activities are unique and the staff is deeply caring and talented. We recognize the unique challenges a participant faces in losing a parent to incarceration, the stigma of shame attached to having an imprisoned parent, the sense of loss, anger, loving a parent who isn't there. Our activities include trips (two weeks ago some of our participants rang the closing NASDAQ bell in Times Square), therapeutic art, gym, dance, academics, drama, group and individual counseling, spoken word, computers, career counseling (for teens) and a thriving mentoring program where children ages 8+ are all matched with mentors who work in a field the participant is interested in. The matches are carefully monitored and the mentors are screened and trained. Fridays are unique opportunities to let loose and we have karaoke, dress-up, face-painting. Homework and academic support is of utmost importance and we ensure that help is given where needed and all homework is checked. We also facilitate connection with the imprisoned parent through assisting in letter writing, mailing art work, and sharing our news-letter and updates. We have monthly parent support group meetings, and parents are able to receive one on one counseling too.
