He has his own room at California Men's Colony - normal?

Maybe a dumb question but my friend has his own cell. I always thought they had bunk buddies. Why would somebody get a single cell? Or is this the norm at CMC?

I can't answer for this specific prison but some prisons have single cells, some are more like a dorm, some have double bunks. So yes, it is possible he has his own cell.

It is not uncommon, but generally for a reason. Prisons are so full that to house inmates individually in a cell just isn't feasible. The single bunk cells are generally used for inmates that need to be separated for some reason.

The reason could be disciplinary, protection, or that he has special needs.

If it is disciplinary then there are probably other things that go along with it. Locked in 23 hours a day. Limited phone access. No quarterly packages, etc.

Maybe he snores so loud that if he was in a dorm the others would suffocate him while he slept.

The best thing to do is ask him.

It's likely only temporary.

It's normal. Most cells on the (East) from what I understand have men alone in cells. Mine was. They also are one of the only prisons that the prisoners wear keys to open and close their own cells.

From my experience, it's nothing out of the ordinary. It's definitely preferable too!!

CMC has some single can cells. If I am not mistaken, the guys can request to be housed there if any are available. If there is a free bunk in his cell then he will have a cellie shortly.
