Notice to new members intending to register - from January 9th 2012

Okay, so I spoke with the customer service in Austin, TX and she read me the "law" that states you have to have your maiden name, if you don't have a middle name, when you marry?? I don't get it. Neither of my sister's have theirs this way. I'm so mad. Everywhere I go, people are going to think my name is "Maya Jones Smith" when my married and legal name by the SS office is "Maya Smith"! Basically what they're saying is that if I had a middle name my maiden name wouldn't show. What's the difference? "Jones" has been dropped all together, so why are they making me use it? I showed my marriage license, my new SS card and still they insist this is how it has to be done.

Now everytime I try to get a new job or house or car or anything I'm going to have to explain the why my SS and license don't read the same name.

Maybe you should get a new card from SS with the same names on it.

Is that just in Texas? Makes no sense to me- but I agree - if that's the only way they'll do it maybe you should think about changing you SS... Still seems strange to me too!!
