Question How is Dalhart prison Unit TX for the inmates-Texas Prison

This is my first post, I just recently discovered this board. My son has been incarcerated now for two years and I still can't get use to the thought or ease my fear for his well being. I am out right terrifed for his safety and sense of well being. He has been in a transfer unit past two years and two and a half weeks ago "chained out". At the moment he is now been sent to Dalhart. I have a fear that is where he will stay. I have so many questions I don't know where to post it all. But for now, does anybody have any experiance with Dalhart? What are the inmates feelings of that place? Anybody know of places for overnight stay near the prison?
And any clue to the mileage quota to qualify for the four hour visit? How does that work? Does Dalhart have contact visits?( I warned ya I was full of questions ) I believe for my next series of questions I should post a differnt thread. I would appreciate any bit of information. Thanks for listening.

Default info about Dalhart Unit

hello this is my first time responding to a thread I usually just read them and find out what other people think about things. anyway I hope my info with help you. My dad has been in Dalhart for almost 3 years now. He is 60 years old with medical problems. It takes me about 13 hours to drive there for a visit so I don't get to go very often. He says that it is a relaxed minimal security prison. He said that they don't have alot of problems with gangs and violence there. From what I have seen it is a very small unit with older guards and inmates. Dad says he would like to have been closer to home but he is afraid to go to a "rock & roll unit" so he says which is a fighting gang prison i think. Anyway when we go we get the 4 hour visit on Saturday and Sunday. Usually three people can visit at a time. The same each day or 3 different people. You have to call inmate records to set up a special visit they like for you to call on Friday before you come and confirm that they are still there and can have a visit. Dad says they just got a better doctor there so I was glad to hear that. I would be glad to talk to you through PM if you would like. There isn't much there in Dalhart though. The hotels aren't that far away from the prison. Very few places to eat. They don't even have a Walmart. We stayed at the Best Western there and it was a okay hotel for the money. We have to stay somewhere that is cheap because it cost so much to go up there. We always pack snacks and drinks to help cut down on the cost. I have found that the people i talk to up there are really nice for the most part. I hope I have been able to answer a few of your questions.

Thank you for your information. I made it to see my son at Dalhart last weekend, was a 8 hour one way drive. I did not try for the special visits this time not knowing how the traveling would go. The place is much calmer than the transfer unit he was in and the guards friendly. They (the guards) took it upon themselves and talked to the warden and got us the extra visit time with my son. I was very grateful. My son refuses to talk about anything that goes on once he goes through the doors back into the prison. So all I can tell from the place is what I experiance in the visiting room. I could get my son moved closer but the place might be not near as calm as the place he is in, so will leave it for now. Thanks again for your reply.

As was said, Dalhart is an OK unit with minimal problems. Stay in touch with the forum here for info.

My brother has been in the Dalhart unit since it was built and he doesn't want to be moved to any other unit. He was transferred to Dalhart from a unit in Huntsville, and he say's the Dalhart unit has a much more calm atmosphere. Our family has circumstances that would allow him a chance to be moved closer to home but he say's no. He is afraid he would be placed in a unit that would be unbearable. He is always upbeat and seems to be as well adjusted to his life as anyone could be under the circumstances. When he was first transferred to the unit he didn't talk about anything about what went on inside and it took him several months to adjust to new surroundings and people but he did. No one in my family has ever had a problem with any of the guards or the wardens. When I visit I mostly see the same guards as I saw before, and they have gotten to know us and are actually pretty friendly to him and us. I hope your experience and your loved one's will be as smooth as ours has been. I have seen very little change in the way the unit works and we are all contented with the knowledge that he is treated fairly as possible.

My hubby was transferred last week. I just got a letter. Thanks for what info is here....Hubby seems a little upset at the moment but then he has been moved like 5 times in the last three months. He only has 18months left. They aren't being very nice because he refused to admit guilt....and he isn't going to .....the accuser's dad is guilty and i have the proof...no one wants to listen because she is too afraid to come forward

I also have a brother in Dalhart Prison. He has been there since about Sept.07. He says it is much better than where he was. Don't have to worry about most of things men worry about in prison. Said it is clean and food pretty good. He works out a lot with another in-mate. I haven't heard from him since he sent me a Christmas card. I am very worried. Does anyone know why I would not hear from him?

Default Received Letter from hubby today

Sugarmac, I received a letter from my hubby today. He didn't mention anything going on. I know that we had issues with his mail early on. He writes weekly....and if i don't get a letter he has stated to call. I have had to call on at least one occasion. Of course the mailroom's stance is that if I didn't get a letter he didn't mail one. I haven't missed a letter since.

I know for a fact your situation though, is not unusual....my husband has asked me to contact others directly because they don't seem to be getting their mail on the inside either.

(Doubt it is the reason but since my call...my letters get to him a little faster and hubby isn't complaining as much.)
