Question Info on visitation at Torres TX Prison Unit

i was wondering if anyone had any info on visitation at the torres unit. its my first time to go there to visit my boyfriend, im going july 23. I was wanting to know what visits are like there, what you have to go thru and stuff like that. i was also wondering what noncontact visits are like there and if you can bring change to buy them stuff from the vending machines even if its a noncontact. what can't you wear there too, i mean can you wear flip flops? do you have to wait a long time for the inmate to come out once you get in the visiting room? any info will be appreciated, thank you!!!

I have been going to the Torres Unit for 8 months and have never had a problem. I wear capris and sandals - no one can wear shorts. We finally started getting contact visits 2 months ago and we usually sit outside if it isn't too hot. Most of the guards are friendly. You can take quarters in to buy things in the vending machines. It is best to get there early or you might have to wait a while. The only complaint I have is we usually have to wait 30 minutes before my grandson comes to the visiting area. From what I have heard it is one of the better places. Hope I have answered your questions.

i was also wondering if in non contact visits you have to use the phones? but thank you for answering those questions. im kinda nervous, i dont know why but i always get nervous when i go to the new units, its kinda scary! lol i dont plan on wearing shorts i wanted to wear a tank top but i have this kinda thing to wear over it, im thinking its too low cut tho, i mean its not to me, but tdc standards might think different.

Yes, in non contact visits you use phones. I would not wear a tank top if I were you. I did see them make a lady go put a jacket on because her top was too low cut.

no i live wayyyyy in east texas. it sucks but hey i get a 4 hr visit! im going july 23rd. My family and I are taking a vacation to san antonio, so i might as well go see my baby because i dont know when i'll be able to come back. We're used to seeing each other twice a month, but since his transfer, its going to be hard on our relationship, but i love em' and i always have. are you going that weekend that i am? the tank top i want to wear its not that low cut, im going to pull it way up past any clevage! lol i have this thing that goes over it though its one of those shirts thats kinda a v neck but it doesnt come together until the bottom of the shirt, its hard to explain. its not a shirt u could wear by itself, u have to wear a shirt under it. its not sleeveless, im just hoping they let me in wearing it, luckily i'll have some clothes with me, so if i have to change i'll just go to the car. i heard its all in the same room too, non contact and contact, i thought that was kinda wierd. i know i'll be having to wait a long time for my boyfriend to get out there, the last unit he was at i had to wait a long time, mostly his fault though, he had to get pretty for me lol. oh yea also i was wondering if you knew any kind of direction to the torres unit, im not sure exactly where it is. oh yea and is parking free there because the last place he was at it cost three dollars. sorry for all the questions but im clueless about this place!

my man was at the torres unit a couple years ago and jojacks is right it is one of the better places in TDCJ. The contact and noncontact are all in the same room and yes the parking is free. You might want to let your man know what time and day you are going to go that way when they call for him he will be ready and you won't have to wait as long. The guards are really pretty nice. I went there for 2 1/2 years and only had a problem with one female guard. Once I talked to the warden about her everything was fine. You are lucky that he is on this unit but at the same time I'm sorry that you are so far apart now. But don't worry things will work out. The unit is pretty laid back. I would wear a shirt or something over the sleeveless shirt because I know for a fact they won't let you in with just that. But good luck and I hope you enjoy your visit!!

dsagirl, I only have had one problem and with a female guard there at Torres. You are right about letting her guy know when she is coming so he can be ready when she gets there. Dustin always knows when we are coming and it takes 30 min. for him to get there. We did have to wait an hour and a half on Father's Day weekend. I will probably there on the 23rd. I go every other weekend.

i've been visiting my guy at torres for the last 1.5 years and i've never had a problem. i come all the way from chicago and have 4 hr visits. we started with non-contact and now we have contact visits. those 4 hr visits sitting on a metal stool can be hard on the a**; but seeing my baby makes it all worth it.

i think it's one of the better units in tdcj. j complains, but nothing that gets me concerned for his safety or well-being, just the regular complaints re: food, cellies, co's.

they won't let you in to visit with something sleeveless so make sure you have a jacket or something to go over it. they also enforce the "no white" rule. they do let you wear sandals without stockings.

it never takes j more than 15 mins. to get down there. he always knows what time my flight lands and an approximate time that i'll be pulling into the parking lot. i always tell him to be ready and waiting when they call his name. there was only one time it took him 30 mins and that was because they made him shave.

i had planned on visiting that weekend. but since he's been interviewed for parole i've decided to hold off until we have a decision. that way i can be there to celebrate if it's good news, or console him if it's bad news.

enjoy your visit....

I just got back from a visit today. Things went good - Dustin was out in about 15 minutes. We had really friendly guards today. The vending machines were pretty low, but if that is our only complaint we got it made.

Michelle, my husband was there for two years. It is a very good unit, very calm as everyone has said. Definately have your two teenagers take ID and dress appropriately. This was one of the better units to visit in my opinion. I was able to go right in and wait at the table for my husband to come in. They also have a nice patio visiting area with covered tables at this unit. There are two towns close by to stop and eat. Beware of Castroville, and watch your speed and all the other traffice laws. Those guys wrote over 8000 tickets in one year back in 2007, thats over 100 per day. (I am sure the tickets didnt go to the 4000 residents! ) Good luck!
