Hi Psnvyd, Welcome to the Mass State Forum.

I think the facility that you're looking for is:

Hampden County Jail at Stony Brook
627 Randall Road
Ludlow, MA 01056

Tel. (413) 547-8000

I'm afraid I don't know anything about this facility -- it's a county jail, and my experience has been with the state prisons.

I found this info under the "Prison Profiles" in the Mass State Forum. If you go to that thread, I believe you'll find this jail listed on the second page, and it lists the sheriff and the various assistants and their phone numbers. I hope this helps a little. There may be other members here with more info, so keep checking back.

What kind of info were you hoping to find? Visiting hours and that sort of thing? Let us know, and someone here might know. Take care, SunnyChick

Hi psnvyd, Tammy is the one who can help you. You could try to reach her with a PM ("private message") or just wait until she stops by and notices your specific questions. I don't know much about the county jails in Mass, but if they're like the Mass state prisons, you can't send him anything (except $ -- and check to see if there are limits, etc -- they may require money orders, I'm not sure). There was a time when you could send what the guys called "care packages" -- at least around the holiday season, but they've discontinued that. You could order him certain magazine subscriptions (nothing too racy/risque) and you can send him books through approved vendors. You can probably get directions from MapQuest or one of those map sites online, or give them a call and ask them to send you directions, a list of VR hours, and also any VR rules and regulations. That's my limited input, but please double-check with Tammy because I think her guy might have spent some time there. Take care, SunnyChick

Hi psnvyd, The phone system in Mass is a mystery to me. I can tell you how it works for me and my guy, and it's very simple, but apparently there are other options that some people use -- plus I don't know how they operate at the county jails.

My guy is at Old Colony in Bridgewater, which is a state prison. He requests to have a number put on his call list. I believe the IPS (internal affairs people) check to make sure that an inmate hasn't listed the number of his victim or might be calling a minor or anything inappropriate. Then my phone number would be put on his call list. Each inmate is also give a personal pin number that they have to enter into the phone when they place a call. I have my phone service through Verizon, and that is apparently okay with everyone involved. When I answer the phone, I get a recording from "Global Tel Link," which is really the prison collect call provider (I think they give kick-backs to the doc or to the state). They say who is calling, he's from a prison, & if I want to accept they tell me to hit "0". After I hit "0" I can talk with my guy, but we're constantly interrupted -- I'd say about every 8 to 10 minutes with a recorded message reminding me that I'm talking to an inmate. The calls last for 20 minutes, and there's a limit on the number of calls that can be made -- no more than $200 worth each month and no more than $35 worth in any given day. I don't know if this includes calls to an attorney's office or not.

Now some people don't use Verizon. For example, a lot of people are switching to that Vonnage Company, which is supposed to be cheaper for ordinary calls. If you don't have Verizon, I think things get a little more complicated, and you have to get some sort of pre-paid deal in place with the company (Global Tel Link?) before they'll start putting the "collect" calls through. Then you simply keep adding $ to your tab or card or whatever it's called.

Again, I don't know how things are set up in the county system, but maybe your guy can find out what he needs to do to get a pin # and how to get your phone number approved. Do they have "staff access" time there? If so, he could ask someone at that time, or maybe his caseworker would know. Shoot, I'll bet there are other guys in there who could give him better information than anyone who works there.

I'm sorry this is so long-winded. I hope it gives you some idea of how things might work. The one thing you can be sure of is that someone is getting rich off of this, because this is a monopoly and they're into price gauging like you wouldn't believe. Wait 'til you start getting the phone bills. Now that should be a crime. Take care, SunnyChick

Hi psnvyd!

My b/f did the first two years this bid, and has done more than that in past bids in Ludlow. You can definitely send money orders, I think the most that they can have in their acct. is like 250.00. They cant receive anything other than that though, no clothes, packages, etc. They do have decent visiting hours, but also be ready to wait when you get their. They are all noncontact, and only last I want to say1-2 hours (my b/f has been doing state time for a while now, so I cant remember everything!). I found it best to go during the week if possible, weekends are always really busy. But if you have kids, do not get there during school hours without a school note allowing them to be out of school, i found that out the hard way!!

Last I knew the phones werent too bad. I did have prepay set up their phones are through Correctional billing, and were only like 2.00 for a half hour call.

Do you know how long they will be in there for??

Please feel free to ask me any questions, if i can answer, i definitely will!!

thank you for the info tammy and no i am not sure as to how long he will be in for and i asked those questions because i am only used to ny state and county facilitys so i wasnt sure if ludlow is similar to new york prison systems. And i do have kids with this guy 4 kids to be exact a 7yr old a 6 yr old and 4 1/2 yr old twin girls with him. but we broke up 3 years ago over a domestic violence dispute and he was served in ny with a permenant order of protection to stay away from me and the kids but i dont think it should show up in the mass doc prison system because all that happened in ny u think it would??? because i want to see him but there is still an order of protection in play for a while. and i just wanted to see him to see what was going on not to get back with him because i am already almost married to my fiance whom is in the ny prison system. thank you for all the good advice and by any chance do u happen to have corectional billings # ??? i know i said i would never deal with them again but oh well those ppl at correctional billing are rip offs i have dealt with them before.trust me i know.

You are welcome for the info!! Thats what we are all here for!!

I dont know what to tell you about the order of protection though. I think that might be a touchy situation. Does that have anything to do with why he is locked up now??

1-800-844-6591 is the number for correctional billing. I have to say in all the time that I dealt with them, I never had a problem, but maybe since you are in a different state, that could make a difference.

I Know Ludlow Like That Back Of My Hand. Visiting Hours Are From 1 To 5:30pm And Then From 7 To 9pm. The Best Time To Go Is Around 2:30 On Tuesday-friday. On Saturdays And Sundays The Visiting Hours Go By Last Names. A Through P On Saturdays And The Rest On Sunday. If You Can Go On Saturday The Besting Time To Go Is After 7pm. The Phone Calls Cost 2.50 Per Call For A Half An Hour. The Inmates Come Out At 8am. They Have To Lock In At 11:45am For Lunch And Come Back Out At 12 Noon. They Lock In Fro Count At About 3:45pm For About A Half An Hour. They Lock In Again For Dinner At 5:45pm And Come Back Out At 7pm. They Lock In For Count Again At 9:45p. They Lock In For The Night At 11:00pm. If There Is Anything Else You Want To Know About Ludlow I Know It. My Fiance Has Been There For A Long Time, And Has Been There Several Other Times Before.

Hi
well I was locked up in Ludlow and The visiting hours are 11am-9pm mon- friday and on the weekends are split between the initial of the inmates last name. You can not send clothes. You can send money orders and they will put it in his commisary account. inmates there cannot wear their own clothes only prison suits. Also you can send him prestamped envelopes. Other than that you cannot send anything else by mail except letters and pictures.
Also the visits there are no contact.....
