Question I'm interested in teaching in an Alabama prison!

I currently teach high school English, but I am interested in teaching in a prison. Does anyone know where I would find job postings for prison teaching jobs? All I can seem to find are postings for corrections officers. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to PTO. I dont know how you find out about teaching in prisons. Maybe you could contact the adoc. They have an email link on their website.

Yup, I'd call the ADOC. I think a majority of positions such as those are contracted out through other organizations (and probably posted in newspaper classifieds, etc.) but someone in Human Resources at ADOC would probably be able to direct you to a listing online or give you information on seeing about non-CO jobs if you call.

People who come in to jails and prisons are usually volunteers. Paid positions are things like the chaplain and social workers. If you want to teach a class it is usually for volunteers, but I'm not sure if that would be different since, for example, Illinois State Prisons offer "college classes", for which I assume you get a degree. However, the G.E.D. teachers in jails ARE volunteers. Of course a high school "English" teachers would have no place in a G.E.D., unless you were going to teach elementary-school-level English classes or switch to another another subject. (Oh, or unless you meant E.S.L.... forgot that it could be that.) If it is a volunteer position, then you can just propose to the jail or prison what you want to do... of course I am not sure how *exactly*; I assume it would involve setting up a meeting with or writing letters to whoever is in charge of "programming" at that facility.

If it is a paid position then I have nothing to say that could help other then call them and ask.
