Adam, I guess that you are scared. It is not an easy thing to think about and fear of the unknown is worse than reality sometimes.

I want you to do a couple of things...

1) Post in the Oregon State forum and ask questions there about Hillcrest.

2) Stay here in the GLBT and you will receive some support from other GLBT members that can assist you with getting ready to go in...

One word of caution - what you read about Hillcrest - read with caution. Some of the comments are true and all are personal opinion. Often what is written is from us on the outside and not from someone that has been on the inside.

Being gay and going in is not the end of the world. You will need to be strong and perhaps stand up for yourself, but you will adjust to your environment and you will come through this.

Ask your questions... interact with others on this site.

Please don't post your personal email address... this is a discussion site and we do not allow you to post your personal email address. We have a private message system if you want to have personal discussions with anyone on the site.

We have some staff that are Gay and have been inside... I have not been inside but support a Partner inside. Others have been inside and can give you some guidance.

Hi Adam...yes it IS scary to think about going to prison, im having fears about possibly doing a month in county here because of a DUI i wracked up back in january.
Anyway...thats my stuff, not yours.
I think Ken is right, fear of the unknown is often bigger than reality.

With all due respect - not many prisons have 'gay units' to be housed in.

Texas has protective custody units. Most states are conscious enough of the danger to gay inmates that many, at least, have gay dorms or safekeeping. Dont worry too much about prison bro. Just be honest during intake, tell the counselors how you feel and what your concerns are and they should take care of you.

All the best...

i am not GLBT, but i really do feel for you, as someone previously posted there are protective units. if you are that scared request Protective Custody upon admission. even lie, say you have reason to believe that your life will be in danger if you're put into gen pop, you make your point clear & that the situation is dire. alot of prisons, LA County for example has separate pods for gay inmates, Pennsylvania has a "Z" code for gay inmates, but that only insures a single cell status, which doesn't sound like it will help your situation. ask to talk to a captain or a lieutenant about your concerns. I know this next thing may sound like horrid advice to people who aren't in your shoes and people who've never been to prison, but if all else fails & you truly fear for your safety...cause a ruckus & get yourself put in ad seg, the hole. it will be unpleasant, but you will be reasonably safe. I have been locked up & have friends & family on the inside, please feel free to contact me by personal message and I will answer any specific questions you may have. I'm new to this forum, but I am sure you will find some help here. keep your head up.

Welcome to PTO--you are never alone and that can be a true blessing. I know nothing about your state or situation. I do know that each experience is different. I just want you to know that you have support here.

Hi Adam. I was a CO in Texas (briefly but not brief enough -- different story though). The prison I worked in did have a "girls" (no insult intended) unit. Large majority were obvious gays, but a small percentage were small and older men, and a few were ex-cops, ex COs. They were general population and allowed as much freedom of movement as other units. Any drama was usually between "lovers" not gay harassment from others.

I know this doesn't answer any concerns about the place you're going to and dealing with the unknown SUCKS. I hope others come along and can alleviate concerns about Hillcrest for you.

Hello Adam hope it has been decided you are not doing some time. Being gay is part of who you are not all of what you are. Think of everything else you have and achieved. There is more to you. You being gay is cool and i bet your a fantastic person .. be you .. the whole you and focus on your strenghts

hi adam
i have a ten year federal prison term, depending on the outcome of my pre sentence investigation. i am gay and scared too. i have no street smarts either. the people online here have been a great comfort. i also bought the book called federal prison, a comprehensive survivors guide by johnathan richards. i am sure there is a book out there that is similar to where you are going. i also told the courts during my pre sentence interview that i am a gay sex addict, which prison that more scary for me. i also am charged with solisation of an underage boy. i was a cop on the other end that got me at a weak moment. the courts said they would place me in a safer place. both of us just have to have faith in god. i have been exersizing more too. hang in there adam. rich

firstly, DO work out. that is a reality that you will need to be strong. learn how to increase your agility and stay on the move. if you ever feel threatened, tell the guards immediately. you can request a cell change if you get harassed. also someone suggested the counselor that is a great idea. you should be offered alot of counseling and can openly express yourself there. i think what you said just put yourself in a box. if that's how you view yourself as "everything" about you screams I'M GAY then just don't speak too much. be reserved. people don't generally talk about what they did anyways, that's a taboo. save it for the counseling sessions trust me on that. write alot to get your feelings out and keep it to yourself. as long as no one feels threatened by you, you really will be ok. DEFINITELY tell the staff you are gay and are really afraid. they will understand and help keep a close watch on you. prison is all about distance. you can actually make some friends there, but trust no one. do your time, do as you're told, and you'll get out quickly. BOL. i will pray your ancestors to watch over you.
