Question California Prison Tour - Your thoughts

Look guys, I was on the web searching around and look what I found. Kinda interesting...

http://www-rohan.sdsu.edu/~psutton/cja430/cja430.html

Prison tours,...look at the one for CMC...rap sessions with murderers....is this a joke?

I know that there are several prisons that do tours to the public. I would personally do it if they allowed it where my friend was. I'm curious to see what things look like at his specific prison. As far was what the cell looks like, the chow hall, rec room... etc.

I'd go.

i would go not so much in hopes of getting a glimpse of my husband, more more to get a glimpse of how his life is behind those walls. that would make me have a broader understanding of what its like behind those walls and i think it may make me feel a bit closer to him too. but hes on san quentins death row and i was told by many that i may not want to see a tour of that because it may traumatize me on what i see adn make me feel sad that i have to leave him in that horrible place.

This is Century Prison, where my sweetheart is. It makes me sick everytime I look at it, and can you believe I have it as an icon on my desktop...I read about some other prisons in Northern states that don't have AC or their AC wasn't working. Century doesn't have AC. It's way over crowded and so, so nasty!!

I'd go, absolutely. Like Ms. Heather said, I'd be curious to see what all the places in the prison look like, like the chow hall, etc.

Lysbeth, I would go also! I think we would have a different experience going than a college student. It would be interesting to see how these prisons are set up, pick up the different flavor of each.

I'd go in a minute, and I'm glad they're doing this- I think. Something about the whole "adventure travel" tone puts me off a bit.

It put me off a lot...luxury tours for young people with a bit of "education" in between. What is there next tour...starving children in Ethiopia!

I went on a tour of the county jail back when my boyfriend was there. We ended up going right in front of his block and his cell was very close to the doors. He was waving to me from his cell. As cool as it was to get to take the tour, it was heartbreaking to see him wave to me from in there and know that he couldn't leave with me.

Default I'm furious...

May I suggest you all take a look (Cali's in particular) at the site LilGhsT referenced above. My blood is boiling and my letter writing skills are heating up. This is the most callous, degrading thing I have seen yet relative to "the system". They act like this is a tour of the Barnum and Bailey circus. I am outraged they are selling tours like this capitalizing on the misery and degra :fb: dation of others. What the hell is wrong with society today? If those little b-------ds want to learn something about the system, put their sorry little butts on the inside and then write their papers to tell about what they have learned. Now that would be some fun reading for US! issed:

I agree ! That is insane ! Do you really need to know what its like inside a prison. The tour firstly isnt even going to come close to showing you what its like, they will show you the good stuff(for lack of better words). Its cold-they keep the heat down-say its to keep the inmates calmer, they wake you up every two hours for count time, they feed you slop three times a day, you share a cell with Lord knows who, if you want to "poop" in privacy you can put up a small towel in front of your cell bars. you can only talk on the phone for 15 min, you have thugs wanting to beat your butt, gays wanting your butt, you have to watch every move you make-get in to fit in-nothing but metal bars and concrete floors, cold, dark, lonely, and isolated. I understand some of ya sayin youd like to see where your man is, but trust me-no you wouldnt, it would make you feel even worse about him being there.

I'm taking a copy of that with me on my next visit. I think I'll show it to a couple of the CO's and will probably end up in trouble if they say the wrong thing. I'm going to write to the Chancellor of San Diego State University too. We wonder why people have the attitudes they do and all of our efforts fall on deaf ears when we try to bring change. This is a perfect example of why people turn a deaf ear to the atrocities of the system. They have been led to believe that prisons hold only a pack of wild animals ripping and tearing at each other if not the CO's. It's sick, really. I would love to have gone on a legitimate tour of the facility just to see what I could see knowing what I know about the inner workings. It would be interesting to see what they put forth for the public to see. I have been at CMC twice when the tours from SDSU have come through. I wish I knew then what I know now. Damn!

I recently toured the corrections facility where my boyfriend is.. It was interesting... I will never forget that feeling when I walked through the control room, and through the gates, and they closed behind our group. It was the strangest feeling. It was so interesting to just catch a glimpse of what his life is really like when I'm not there. I wished that they would've just left me off at his room.. I would have gladly ended my tour there

Default Prison Tour

MCI (Marion, Ohio) is active with the Kairos Prison ministry.. they had their annual Kairos Inside/Outside fund raising concert held "inside" the prison... it is an experience to walk through those doors and have them "lock" behind you... sad thinking about the ones left inside when we went home afterwards. It was an awesome benefit... We got to experience the inmates performing worship songs through sign language.. Haven't heard anything negative about that facility.. I am looking forward to being part of that facility with Kairos.

I would want to tour the one where my husband is. Just because i would like to see the environment he is made to live in.i want to see the chow hall, recreation, ect. then again it would be depressing in a sense to but at least i would be able to visualize what hes talkin about if i could see it.
