Default Gaile Owens Freed!

For the second time as governor, Phil Bredesen has commuted the death sentence of a convicted murderer – this time a woman.
Gaile Owens would have been the first woman executed since record keeping began in Tennessee. She had exhausted her legal appeals and was set to die by lethal injection in September. Governor Bredesen says he made two considerations. For one, it appears she was abused by her husband before she hired someone to kill him in 1985. Story is here.

One member of the Tennessee Board of Probation and Parole voted Wednesday morning to release Gaile Owens from prison. She needs three more “yes’’ votes to be released on parole.
Owens, 58, was convicted in 1986 of hiring a man to kill her husband, who she later said had physically and sexually abused her. She was sentenced to death.

On July 14, 2010, just 77 days before she was scheduled to die by lethal injection, former Gov. Phil Bredesen commuted her sentence to life, making her eligible for parole.

While I have no one on DR and am completely on the fence about the DP, I am glad to hear that fairness and mitigating circumstances are considered in her case.
I believe this woman should've NEVER been on DR (as so many others). For crying out loud, she got abused by your spouse for many years, physically and emotionally, and her actions may have been, in her mind, her only way out.
Thank you, Gov. Bredesen, for being a fair and thoughtful person! Have you given any thought to running for governor of Texas???

This is wonderful news! Gaile should never have been on DR in the first place!

Wonderful news indeed. I certainly do not condone what she did, nor would I advocate that anyone follow in her footsteps. But....desperate people do desperate things. This was most definitely not a capital crime. I wish her well.

You are right-she should have never been charged as she was. But she has been punished and deserves her freedom. I don't think she'll ever be a threat to anyone else.
