My boyfriend was just sent to downstate on 3/3/04 can someone tell me the rules on visitation and phone calls. He hasn't called yet so when will he be able to? I called yesterday and they said he hasn't been classified yet. During visitation what can you wear and not wear? Are you allowed to kiss them or touch them?

Welcome to PTO!

To answer specific questions on the prison you will probably want to post
on the state forum where the prison is.

Downstate is a reception center and he will be more than likely be moved within 2 weeks so you will probably only get to visit him there once or twice. I only went once and from what i can remember you can bring food to give to him. There are vending machines which are pretty much standard food for CFs. i believer they are restricted from using the phone a certain amount of time and they are totally bored out of their minds from what i was told. My husband slept alot and missed his first oportunity to call home. but i received a letter and he let me know what to bring him. not too bad

Try searching this forum for "downstate" there is a thread with a lot of detail. I would agree generally not too bad but beware: even if a shirt is long enough to tuck in they may call it too short.

Before you go to see him you should call them first to make sure he can have a visit since he just got there. He'll have a phone call in a few days. They are extremely picky when it comes to the clothes your wearing. Your best bet is to wear a pair of jeans that don't have any metal on them but the zipper, cause if they ring your gonna be sitting there waiting for like an hour to get strip searched before going to your visit. As for a shirt, nothing with any slits on it or metal or anything see through. Don't even wear a white shirt unless it's real thick or a sweater cause they'll tell you they see through it. Just don't wear anything low cut, slit, short, or revealing in anyway and you should be alright. If you want to know what he can get for a package, just call them up and ask for the package room and they'll tell you. And they also get a visit everyday, the best is the weekday if you can go cause there's no line and you get in real fast. Try to be there by 8 and you should be fine. Metro North only takes 88 minutes from Grand Central Station to Beacon where you would get off and get an $8 cab ( it's round trip). If you need anymore info just let me know. Hope the info helps. Good Luck.

Default Visiting Rules

Thanks outshineswisdom! Do you know anything else such as are you allowed to kiss them when you see them or can you take pictures? Someone posted that their visit was taken away for a couple of months b/c she kissed her husband while taking a picture. Also, does downstate have a list of what you can send them also what about commisary how do I send that? Also if anyone has in helpful rules for visiting Downstate please let me know.

No problem, I'm here to help with whatever I can. I never heard of a visit being taken away because of a kiss during a picture, but if it happen to her then maybe it's true. I know you can take pics with them if their not in the infurmery. You are aloud to kiss then when you get there and before you leave. When you go there just go to the package window and ask for the list they will give it to you. As far as money goes you can only leave $50 at a time on a visit, but if you send a money order it can be any amount possible. More then likey he is only there for a few weeks until a bed opens at the facility where he will serve his time. Just in case, every so many days you should check the inmate locator and see if he was moved or not to be on the safe side. It's on the DOC website, it also has the list of all the facilities and there address and phone number. Hope everything works out on your visit. Good Luck. If you need anymore info I'll be happy to help.

Usually in downstate in takes 2 weeks to be classified with my fiance I had to wait until he was classified to visit. You can visit every day once he gets classified and visits are 8am to 3 pm and u can stay the whole time. Make sure u call ahead 1st to make sure he can get visits

My boyfriend was just there about a month ago. They're not allowed any visits the first two weeks, and I think they only get one five minute phonecall every 30 days or so. The visits were okay, lots of vending machines inside so bring your quarters or singles. I saw people taking pictures but I think the guys have to buy tickets for the pictures through commissary in advance. I wore sweatpants and a sweatshirt everytime I went as to not beep a million times going through the metal detectors. But most bras go off with or without underwire. Let me know if you have anymore questions, I'll be happy to answer .....
