Default Life of residential inmate

Hi, I just been charged with an offence which carried 10 years maximum in prison. Currently it is at local court which can impose 5 years maximum. My lawyer stated that I would probably be going to minimum security jail.

I'm just wondering what prison for an inmate like, I heard that assults and rape do occurred in nsw prison. I also heard that the minimum prisons are like two star hotels.

I just want opinions from people with experience. I had google the information but not much information avaliable.

Many Thanks

Hi b-Boy. Don't take any notice of what you see on TV and in the films about gaol. Its boring and sometimes uncomfortable and damn inconvenient for your family when they come to visit but for the most part if you obey certain rules you'll not find it dangerous. Don't talk about your offense. Don't ask anyone about theirs. Don't touch anyone elses stuff. Don't go into any one elses room or cell unless you are invited. I'm sure others here will give you some more pointers. Don't be too concerned about the maximum term business just based on what they CAN give you. Usually (unless yo've been really naughty) you will get less. My husband could have gotten 12 years and he got 27 months with parole at 18months.

Good luck.

My partner is currently in Goulburn x wing (which is the min area). He pretty much keeps to himself. Has one or two people he "trust" eg shares buy up with and cooks with.
He is finding it ok. He works in the kitchen and earns about $50ish a week for 6-7 days a week. He has been there for 9 months and only seen one violent issue. While he doesnt enjoy it, its liveable.

Hi B_Boy, First, it is not guaranteed that you will get a custodial sentence, so do all you can to convince the Judge that you have learnt your lesson. Write a letter to Court letting them know how you feel about what you did, how you plan to make your life different in the future, What you can do to make up for it etc etc. Get letters of support from family, work, people you know thru any clubs or Church etc, to say about your charactor, the remorse you have shown, goals etc. All this can help. If there is time, are there any courses you can do, especially around drug / alcohol/anger issues if appropriate. Ask your lawyer for any other ideas.

Your questions about jail, I'd say much the same as Becky2 as said. Dont gamble unless you have on hand the price to pay up. dont lend / borrow. there is Always interest!. Keep away from gang affiliations.

This next bit is the advice my mate has given to me for this question - If you do get into a situation where you think something may happen, make sure you are out in the open, not in a cell or enclosed space. Let the other person make the first and second move. Sounds hard, and yes, it is, but if caught on camera it will be better for you. after the second move, go hard and stand up for yourself.

Be respectful and polite, both to the other inmates and the guards. You dont have to be chatty or friendly, but always respectful. Be wary of anyone that is overly nice to you, they may well have an alterior motive.

I hope that it will not come to you needing any of this advice, I wish you all the best for your sentencing, please keep us updated.
