Default Termination of the Family Reunion Program

If anyone has been following Bill 3747-2011 in the NY State government, you may know that on June 16th the Senate passed the bill to recommend that the Commissioner of NY DOC permanently terminates the FRP in NY State. This is really unfortunate because although a few of us tried to bring this to light and spread the word for others to write letters to their senators and fight to keep this program, it seems that it fell on deaf ears thinking "that would never happen." Well, now the fact of it becoming a reality is closer than ever.

I am not exactly sure what can be done at this point because it has already caught on like wildfire in the senate, but I would encourage all of you to please speak out on this at your visits and to your loved ones to write the Commissioner's office, your senator, or whoever you think can assist im amplifying your voice to not terminate the program.

The press release which announces this legislation to the Senate

this has passed the Senate and was referred tot he corrections committee in the assembly I believe. I do not think this will pass the assembly--but that is strictly my opinion andshould not stop anyone from writing their Assemblyman.

My mother in law is a personal friend of Governor Cuomo family and the FRP bill will not be signed by the governor!

Unfortunately regardless if we think its a dead bill, or won't pass or whatever, the fact remains that it has slipped through the cracks as far as it has because of this attitude many of us have. I am not saying that in a negative way because you are probably correct that it won't be signed. Maybe it won't pass, but there are many things that DO get passed in regards to NY DOC for this same reason that many times goes unnoticed. We don't take the initiate to make these people understand that our inmates have a voice THROUGH US. I wrote every single senator on that committee just to let them know that they are not soulless individuals that can be used as pawns and excuses for budget cuts and also encouraged the three senators that are against to help in rallying their colleagues by being properly educated on what the FRP is and not be swindled by the twisted and misinformed terminology in the bill.

I just wish more of us could tale a few minutes to not take any of these privelages for granted and make it known how much we really need that and other programs.

you are right on Miss Val (as those of us in my generation used to say!). We actually have a big voice--if we would use it!

MissVal thanks for attempting to shine a bigger spotlight on this bill and our position of loved ones supporting those incarcerated. I live in a state where climbing a mountain to get such visits as the family reunion seem insurrmountable. It's harder to fight to regain something that was in place and taken. Right now the climate seems to be to diminish even more programs for ex-offenders and re-entry.

It's not too late to write and call. Getting organizations that support ex-offenders, crime reduction and recidivism, and family advocacy involved would be helpful if any of our members are associated with these.

Ladies your words are comforting. I have family doing time in NYDOC and two of them participate in the "Family Reunion Program".
I sincerely hope this bill doesn't pass.

This post, which is above, has the links to the Assembly members who are on the Corrections Committee. If possible, please start with them, however also send to the Assembly person in your own district if you live in NY State. I sent my first batch off a couple of weeks ago, but my goal is to send to every Assembly person in NYS.

I've mailed everyone on the list as well as called. I also have written to the Commissioner and Governor and other organizations. Someone has even started another petition @ gopetition.com

The bill we need to be concerned about right now is the SHU Exclusion Bill, which is undergoing 11th hour changes that could have a negative impact on prisoners. It's always good to let our polititions know where we stand.
Let's stay calm girls. Giglio has sponsored A08478 (Assembly Bill 08478) which is the same as S3747. As of , 6/17/11 the bill was referred to Corrections Committee and "NO VOTES ARE SCHEDULED FOR THIS SESSION." This session ends... June 30, which means this IS A DEAD BILL. If either the Senate or the Assembly bills are to survive, they will have to be re-introduced in the next session and start all over again. If, by some fluke they are reintroduced and pass, they still have to be signed by the Governor and there's no way Cupomo will sign a bill eliminating FRP's. Also, Bill A08479 is not related to FRP's, it establishes an oil, gas and land commission.

NowHisWife has been putting up postings regarding this bill since 5/11 starting with a petition. I have been putting up things regarding this issue since last week and have been writing. My Senator voted to pass this bill. I have sent a letter to all the Assemblymen that are part of the Corrections committee. We need to be a big voice and I still don't understand why when I was posting this last week not many seemed so concerned but now we are in the 11th hour and the closest we have been to have this issue passed that there is this big rush to have our voices heard. Yes, we need to band as one voice to let our representatives in government know how this bill is going to affect our loved ones and our families. We need to be a team and work together.

@MikeyRed. A few of us have been putting the word out on our visits, at our support meetings and through our ex-incarcerated contacts for a while now, so your call was not ignored by us. We do, as you said, need to pull together with things like this. Too many of us take the few privilages they have for granted and will be upset if everything gets taken away.

I'm also hearing now that at Auburn, and possibly other facilities, they want ALL visits to be no-contact. So we definitely need to pull our head out the clouds and see that their well-being is at risk everyday if we don't speak out. Thanks everyone for your continued wise words!

Oh my word. I cannot believe they want Non-Contact visits. This is going to far this is inhumane.

Can I write to the Assemblymen and Senator even though I'm not a resident of New York? Please let me know bcause this affects me. My ex-husband is in NYDOC and he has a lengthy sentence (we have children together). Also I have other family members serving time in NYDOC.

I just cannot believe this.

Inmates are not allowed to distribute anything like this in prison. Please be careful he could end up in so much trouble.

According to a few sites, The Bill S3747 now has a sponsorship in the Assembly, where the number is now A8478. This is not looking good.

Yes it does have the support of Assemblyman Joe Giglio so PLEASE let all have our voices heard before its too late. Send the letter Val posted which is fantastic by the way to ALL the Assemblyman on the committee ask friends, family and even co-workers to help support our loved ones incarcerated.

This would be really bad for all involved
