New Inmate Telephone System Provider

The Department has chosen a new company - Telmate - to provide inmate telephone services. Telmate's crews will install new phone equipment over the next six weeks, beginning at SRCI on Monday, May 14, 2012. There will be no disruption to phone service while the new equipment is being installed. The new telephone system will be activated statewide on July 1, 2012.

I'm wondering if they're going to charge a service fee every time you purchase minutes. That would be a drag for those who now mail in money orders by snail mail, which only cost about $1.

Last time the DOC was considering a phone system change, they made the mistake of posting rates in advance and there was a big blow-back over it. They "postponed" the change. Looks like this time, they're holding it close to the vest until the actual phone system change begins.
