Default Cell phone question--if you change the phone & the plan, do you keep the same number?

I am really hoping someone knows the answer, because see my friend changed cell phone plans and the actual phone on Saturday, and I forgot to ask if the number was going to be different, but it's the same provider. I won't see my friend again til Thursday when I go back to work, and I called a little while ago and I just got an automated "You are being forwarded to an automated voice mailbox" and then it said "(The number) is not available, leave a message at the tone" and it used to be a personalized greeting, and I left a message but I haven't heard back. I assuming it would be the same number, but if it's not and I wasn't "privileged" enough to get the new number I am going to be very upset. My friend did tell me that all the numbers in the phonebook in the old phone automatically transferred to the new phone, so I mean that probably means it's the same number, right? I assuming unless you ask for it, if you are with the same provider but just switch plans and get a new phone, the number stays the same? Anyone know?? lol

from my experience (i did the same thing) i had the same number. I am pretty sure its the same across the board, but i guess it depends on the provider (im with verizon)...

Grrrr I just posted and I guess it lost the post! Anyway I will try to remember what I said...

Thanks for the info, girls. I just called again and I got that same automated voice, so now I have another question...if the number is different now, would that automated voice still be coming on that says it's forwarding me to a voice mailbox, or would it say it's not a working number?? See because before it was a personalized message, so I wonder wouldn't that stay on, if it was the same number? Hmm. I just hate not knowing what's up.

if the number isnt the same, it would say the number is not in service (meaning it's disconnected) im thinking that since she switched to a new phone, she didnt set up the voicemail on the new phone. thats why your probably getting the automated message. she will have to re-do her personalized message. when you switch phones you have to do that stuff over again.

Yeah, i just recently switched from Sprint to Nextel, it took them like 8 hours to port my number over. But Nextel gave me a number until the old one was ported. Did not take long at all.

Thanks so much for all the info, girls!! It really helped me out! My friend finally called me the next day and said her new phone was on silent and she didn't know it LOL so it's all good. It was the same number, but the personalized greeting just wasn't set up yet, like BrownShuga27 said. Thanks ladies!
