9:00-9:25 Introduction with American Friends Service Committee's (AFSC) Jana Schroeder, Ohio

Criminal Justice Program Director, and conference organizer Steve Bright, Ohio

Criminal Justice Program Associate.

9:30-11:00 Keynote address. Lucasville 4/11/93: Ten Years Later. Join historian, lawyer and

veteran activist Staughton Lynd as he discusses the Lucasville prison riot and the

effect it had on Ohio's criminal justice policy.

11:00-11:10 Break

11:10-12:30 End it, don't mend it!: an anti-death penalty panel discussion featuring moderator

Jana Schroeder; Michael Manley, Amnesty International state wide anti-death pen

alty coordinator; Jeffrey Gamso, ACLU criminal defense attorney; and Sala Nolan,

Minister for Social Justice with the United Church of Christ.

12:30-1:30 Lunch on your own.

1:30-2:15 Workshop Session I (choose one)

- Equitable Telephone Charges. Paula Eyre, president of Ohio Citizens United for

the Rehabilitation of Errants (CURE) will discuss the ETC campaign and ways to get

involved.

- Incarcerated Women's Issues. Monique Hoeflinger, an attorney with the Prison

Reform Advocacy Center and teacher at the River City Correctional Center, and

Michelle Baker, a paralegal and formerly incarcerated woman.

- Incarcerated Native American's Religious Freedom, with Matt Sherman of the

American Indian Movement.

2:15-2:30 Break

2:30-3:15 Workshop Session 11 (choose one)

- Supermax. Alice Lynd, a longtime activist and attorney who worked on the class

action suit brought against the DRC on behalf of the prisoners at the Ohio State

Penitentiary, and Kunta Kenyatta, who was recently released from the OSP, discuss

supermax conditions and overuse of the Security Threat Group label.

- The Country Club Myth. Dan Cahill, director of the Prisoner Advocacy Network

(PAN) and ex-prisoner; Ida Strong, Vice President of CURE-Ohio; Rob Jones, a former

prison guard; and Lessley Harmon, also an ex-prisoner dispel the myth.

3:15-3:30 Break

3:30-4:15 Workshop Session III (choose one)

- Education and Recidivism. Dr. Norma Wilcox and Dr. Mary Ellen Batiuk will pre

sent the results of their recent study on the effects of education on recidivism.

- Get Organized. Rachael Dietkus, organizer with the Illinois Coalition Against the

Death Penalty, Molly Gena with the ACLU, and Steve Bright with AFSC will discuss

ways to get more students involved.

4:15-4:30 Break

4:30-5:00 Reflections and announcements.

Directions

In the Ohio Union at Ohio State Univ.
1739 N. High St.

There are many possible routes to Columbus. As there is construction around the campus of OSU, it is best to reach the Ohio Union from I-71, regardless of the direction you're coming from.

From the Northeast: Take I-71 South towards Columbus. Take the 17th Ave. exit (111) and turn right on E. 17th Ave. Travel .85 miles, turn left onto Summit St., then turn right onto E. 15th Ave., then turn left onto N. High St.

From the Northwest: Take US 23 South to I-270 East to I-71 South, then follow directions above.

From the East: Take I-70 West to I-71 North. Take the 17th Ave. exit (111) and turn left onto E. 17th Ave. Travel .85 miles, turn left onto Summit St., then turn right onto E. 15th Ave., then turn left onto N. High St.

From the West: Take I-70 East to I-71 North, then follow directions above.

From the Southwest: Take I-71 North, then follow directions above.

From the South: Take US 23 North to I-70 East to I-71 North, then follow directions above.

From the Southeast: Take US 33 North to I-70 West to I-71 North then follow directions above.

When you turn onto High St. you'll be facing South. Immediately be on the lookout for Parking Garage C on your right. You may park there all day for $6.50. The Ohio Union is the next building to the South. Come in the front door (High St. entrance). The conference will be on the second floor. The wheelchair accessible entrance is at the rear of the building, on the west side, and the elevators are straight down the opposite hall and on the right. Park in Garage C as near to College Ave. as possible for best access. If you have questions, call the Office for Traffic and Parking at (614)292-9341.

Registration

8:30-9:00 on the day of the conference. $5 to $25, please pay what you can to help cover expenses. No pre-registration.

Lunch

12:30-1:00. There are eight restaurants in the lower level of the Ohio Union, and numerous other restaurants nearby on High St. that can provide an affordable lunch.

The next Ohio Criminal Justice Activist Conference, planned by the
American Friends Service Committee and the OSU Campus Greens, will be
Saturday, April 12, from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm in the Journalism Building
on the campus of Ohio State University. Some people have received a
flyer for the conference - please note that the location has changed
as the Ohio Union was double booked (and we lost). Spread the word!

Registration is $5 - $25,and we ask that you pay what you can to help
cover expenses. No pre-registration necessary.

There is a change in the workshop for Native Americans in the afternoon session. Mr. Sherman declined and I was asked to take that time slot. So look for the ole ndn there.
