Lightbulb Study Strategies!

Here are some that has been shared with me and has helped me .. hope these help you..

1. Rewrite or type your notes and think about them as you do. Use the text and handouts to help fill in any gaps.

2.Try converting you notes into outline form. This helps seperate main topics from supporting ideas..

3.the brain looks for patterns. Try using mnemonic devices to help you remember lists. To learn the 12 most abundant elements in living things and there symbols try C HOPKINS Ca Fe Na Mg Cl (you say c hopkns cafe naturally mighty close") doesnt matter how absurd a mnemonic is as long as it helps you remember .

4. Whatever you find to be your best study method, do it frequently. frequent repitition is far more effective than a cram session. The mind best recalls information that is accessed frequently. Review new lecture material within a few hours after class. Tey and go over all of your notes at least once a day, seven days a week.

5. Priorities: Anything covered in lecture has a higher priority than topics covered only in the text. The more time allocated to a topic in class, the more time you should spend studying it. learn the content of figures used to illustrate concepts, processes and facts. Practice solving any type of problem covered in lecture. Be able to define and use scientific terms or symbols used in a lecture. Hints or rhethorical questions from an instructor indicate important topics.

6.Make Note cards. the process of making them is as much a study practice as using them..
hints for making note cards:
a) front~ write a term or brief question ..back~ write the definitition or answer to the question.
Front~add a picture or illustration back~ give an example or other pertinent information..
b) Keep it brief~ only 2-3 lines for a definition or answer
c)drawing illustrations makes you analyze a figure but its also okay to glue on a photocopied picture.
d)For labeling draw a few lines to important parts of the figure .. place the answes on the back.
e) use note card for daily review.. as you learn the material remove the note card from the set.. Focus on the ones you are having trouble on.
f) make your own cards instead of borrowing ..

7.Use Highlighters~ go thru your notes and use different colors to hihglight vocabularyand main concepts.. you can also use the highlighters to highlight things that you dont know.

8.Draw things that you might have to label or recognize like a cell or blueprint.. If you can draw it out, label it and explain it then you know it.

9. Teach what you are studying .. Explain it outloud - to your friends, children or even your animals.. Add emphasis and feeling .. try and explain it where anyone could understand it..

10.Take breaks while studying. this prevents fatigue and should allow you to study longer and more effectively .. For every 45 mins you should get up for 10 mins ..

11. As you go through your notes, make up exam questions. This forces you to analyze information.. Use the questions to quiz yourself later.

12. Don't deprive yourself of sleep. Efficent study depends on it.. Sometimes the difference in confusion and understanding is a good nite sleep

Great tips, J!

I used to type up my own study guides. That worked especially well if the teacher gave us a review sheet or something before the exam. I would organize the study guides by major topics and then break it down into subtopics and only put the stuff that I thought was important or would be asked on the test. After a while, you can pretty much figure out what most teachers will ask on tests, so it's kinda easy to make up your own study guides. And even though it might be a pain in the ass, it always worked really well for me and I think I learned the best that way...
