Thumbs up Singapore - Justice with softer touch, wider angle

New Community Court offers more options to mentally-ill and young offenders

In the first initiative he has unveiled since taking charge of Singapore's judiciary, Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong sought to inject more choices and perspective into the justice system..
Those who are aged between 16 and 18 — too old to be tried in juvenile courts but still not mature adults — those who are mentally ill and the distressed ones who attempt suicide will no longer be lumped with run-of-the-mill criminals. Disputes between neighbours, cases involving animal abuse, domestic violence and the sensitive issue of race will also be heard in a different setting.
