Default "Going home" box?

Last Tuesday I picked up a friend being released from Madison (hub's former bunky). It was quite a surprise to me to see he was wearing a tee shirt and jeans. He said his mom was allowed to send him a "going home" box with his own clothes and sneakers in it. I didn't know about this. Did everybody else? I still don't know the details.

Our friend claims his case manager never mentioned the going home box to him, and by the time he found out he could get his own clothes and called his mother she barely had time to get it to the prison. She didn't know she needed to mark it "Going Home Box" on the outside. She had someone call the package room at Madison, where they quite cheerfully tracked it down and got D's clothes to him just in time.

It was a pleasure to be there for somebody's release, but I've gotta say if you want it to be a happy and celebratory occasion, you're going to have to work at it. We picker-uppers all seemed slightly confused and some were tired from their long drives. We were all definitely watching the wrong place for the guys to appear! Sigh. The released guys all looked very happy to be wearing their own clothes and having unlimited hugs from their families. (I don't know bunky well enough for hugs, so we had to go with the hearty handshake. He's old fashioned that way.)

Does anybody know what else can go in the going home box?

Myrna: You can send a box of clothing and accessories in a "going home box. I just recently put my husband's box together, and will be mailing it from the London post office after my final visit next week.
You can send just about any reasonable type clothing-I'm sending dress shoes and slacks, belt and a silk shirt, shades and a "Godfather" hat he requested.
He will be "dressed to the nines" as they say. I hate seeing guys go home wearing those hideoud white sweatshirts and blue/black
sweatpants.
The box must be marked "going home box" or it will not be released to him.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

Hoo-ha, Ourfirstloves! Your husband is going to look great and you're going wrinkle him before he even gets in the car.

I hear you about the sweat pants, especially in August.

How long before their out date can you send the going home box? Can you send them their own cologne? Maybe I could just douse his clothes with it before I put it in the box.

I don't know how any of this will affect my if he goes to a halfway house, now that I think of it.

From what I've been told, you can send it at least 3 weeks in advance. I sent one last year for a friend of his, who sent me money to go shopping for him. He wore alligator shoes, black slacks and a cream color knit shirt.

Yes, I plan to do alot of "wrinkling"-he hasn't been "wrinkled" in 20 years.

Just make sure you mark the box Going Home, though.
As far as cologne, I'd get a couple of sample packets maybe from the Avon lady, or from a dept. store. They shouldn't complain about that.

Hey Myna. Was your friend released on the 8th? Jay was released that Tuesday from Madison, too! I sent his "going home box" about a week before his out date. I just sent shoes and clothes. Hope that helps and hope he gets the halfway house.

So I guess I will have to wait till we find a gas station for him to be wearing his jeans lol.Oh and his hat lord forbid I foget that thing.

Yes! On the 8th. What a coinkydink. Were you there? I'd hate to think I missed a chance to meet a PTO-er. Is everything going ok? Good luck!

I'm ashamed to say I didn't even look at the other people being released because I was so weirded out by the rest of the experience.

One more - dmforever, what kind of hat? He must really be missing it if it's not a plain green or blue baseball hat, and I'm guessing it isn't. Hat men just feel nekkid without their hats.

I wasn't there. His mom picked him up. He's my ex. Our son is so happy to have him home. Everything is good so far. He's even found work already.
