"Room and board" is assessed. That is true. It depends upon the institution your loved one is at. I called the state attorney general a few weeks back and requested a copy of the cost assessed to each inmate at each institution. It ranges from $26 per day up to $63 per day for the time period June 06 to June 07, so the numbers are probably a little larger now.

Four things to note: Missouri Incarceration Reimbursement Act [MIRA] (RSMo 217.825 - 217.841) stipulates the following:
1) Once you are classified by the DOC and sent to your final assignment, your assets are assessed, which includes money and real estate.
2) Upon release, the state attorney general receives this info from the DOC.
3) If it is determined that you can repay at least 10% of the accumulated costs of incarceration over a period of 5 years, the attorney general may (or may not) require that you repay those costs. They may legally put a freeze on your money, and they can put liens on your real estate.
4) The amount two inmates at the same institution would be charged (if they are charged at all) is identical--no special costs because you happen to be a millionaire.

Now, as many have suggested, it is not a certainty that they will assess the charges. There is a single attorney who handles these cases at the attorney general's office, so you can imagine he is a busy man, and perhaps (but I don't know this) he only goes after the big-money folks.

Hope that helps.

Oh! And as Christy may eventually say, just don't worry about it, becasue what will happen will happen and there is not much you can do now except hang on and not fall off the ride!
