Default Has anyone ever heard this before?

I heard that if an offender gets his B.S. degree while in prison. They get out sooner. Has anyone heard of this? My inquiring mind wants to know. I know there a lot of rumors out there, is this just another one?

I have never heard that if you get a degree you automatically get a set amount of time off your sentence. I know in some states if you are enrolled in school that helps with your good time, and it also can help with parole boards. But I have never seen it like "get a b.s. degree, and get 10% off your sentence no strings attached".

Ive heard of time cuts for this but Im sure it varies from state to state. And not just for the B.S degree also for associates, technical cetificates etc. Look at the prison website to see what classes they offer there.

Not in Minnesota. In fact it is pretty hard now days with all the budget cuts. But I guess Minnesota differs from some states in that we do not have a parole board. There is nobody to go up in front of and asked to be released. We have what is called Program and Release Team. But they in fact do nothing except state what programming you will need before you will be released on your SRD. Minnesota sentencing is based on 66.6% of your sentence will be served in prison and the remaining 33.3 will be served as parole. (With exception of Life Sentences) Then it is a 30 year sentence and they do have a parole board that consists of board members and the Commissioner of Corrections. but for an example an inmate gets 30 months. He will serve 20 months in prison with the remaining 10 on parole. We don't have good time in Minnesota. If you screw up they give you what is called EI (Extended Incarceration) and just add more time you spend in prison. When your release date comes up, as long as it is Monday through Thursday they will release you after first count in the morning. MN will not release Fri Sat or Sunday.

But back to the question/Comment.

Minnesota does not give breaks for completing Treatment, AA-NA, college courses, It would be nice. My brother has gotten his Associate of the Arts Degree as well as two 2 year Tech Degrees while he has been in. Wish they would give him a break....

Thank you for all the info. Not what I was hoping to hear, but good to know. I thought it was too good to be true.
