One-year sober deserves praise

NILES - Beating alcohol addiction can be a very tough process, but very rewarding in the end.

On Thursday afternoon, a group of seven individuals were honored at the Berrien County Trial Court, South County building, for completing a successful one-year Sobriety Probation Program. This is the first group to receive the honor, as the program was started one and a half years ago by Berrien County Judge Scott Schofield.

"The Sobriety Program resulted from a problem courts faced with repeat drunk drivers. We were just tossing them in jail, but jail has its own problems. Most are too crowded and costs more money to our taxpayers. Jail is good, but it's not good at turning drunk driving offenders into sober, law biding people," Schofield said.
