A gift for his mother

I was wondering what would be a good christmas gift to my mother-in-law from my husband and myself? I have asked him what has he given his mother and he told me that he probably gave her money. He was the one that went out shopping for gifts. This is my first Christmas being his wife and I would like to give her something nice. I was thinking of a Gift Certificate to her favorite Store but if I did that how much should I get it for? Then I must think of what should I get her for her Birthday since its in January. Just confused. Right now what I am trying to do is build a relationship with her and just doing what a daughter-in-law would be doing for her new MIL. Any Suggestions? Thanks!
