Default Motion to Appeal..Now What?

So we have just filed the notice that we will be appealing the conviction. Can anyone suggest any benefits to appealing pro per? We don't know yet if we will be hiring an attorney, or using the one assigned from the public defender's office. Anyone know how long we have to find a lawyer, once the appeal process starts? I have heard stories about people winning an appeal pro per, but isn't that kind of risky, since you have to know an awful lot about the law, to even attempt to appeal a case?? Any insight would be appreciated.
