My name is Amanda. I've been checking this site out for a few days and everyone seems friendly so, I signed up. I have sooooo many questions.

My boyfriend is about to do 8 months, this is his first trip with the DOC and we're unsure about what to expect. How long before he gets where he's going? What happens during processing? How do they decide where to send him? How often can he call? That's only the beginning...I'm very overwhelmed by all of this and freaking out a bit. He leaves on the 9th. Only 6 more days

FYI my email is agw0105@ecu.edu

Processing usually takes 2-4 weeks. Then he will be shipped to another camp. As far as which camp he will go to depends on whether he is going to be minimum, medium or close custody. They usually try to get them as close to home as possible, depending on vacant beds, etc. You came to the right place for information and for a shoulder to lean on. Remember, we're all on the same boat with a few differences. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask if you need anything. Oh, 2021 and Layd can be very helpful with DOC guidelines.

Hi Amanda,
Welcome to PTO - sorry you are here but glad we have this great place to help you with questions, support or whatever.

I know you are nervous about all of this...the unknown is worrisome for sure. You've had some good answers so far.

The NCDOC web site has a great place to start to find some info out for yourself. Here's the link:
http://www.doc.state.nc.us/FamilyServices/index.htm

Calls frequency and amount of time are mandated by custody level and the facility he is sent to. Letters are the cheapest form of communication as the calls are expensive. Depending on what his sentence if for his processing may take a bit longer if they put him a specific class. Once he is settled in he will send you visitation forms which have to be filled out precisely (don't ask me how I know! LOL!). Those forms follow him to any facility he is transferred to within the NCDOC system.

The 8 months will go by quickly and before you know it this will all be in your past and the two of you can move forward with life.

Good luck and feel free to ask any questions you like or just vent when it all becomes frustrating.

Triplejs

Thanks for the info guys, I just found out that his sentence may be reduced a little and since he's going voluntarily he'll probably be minimum security. He's under 25 so I think his PO mentioned a youth camp? I'm not sure if thats good or bad. Younger inmates may feel like they have more to prove...?
