Default Problem

In 1985 I did a brief stint in a federal halfway house. This was the result of a bust for dealing cocaine. Herein lies a problem.

My wife and I are nearing retirement and hope to be able to move to Portugal or Uruguay. Since my sentencing, I have attained a second master's degree and have worked as a social worker, therapist, counselor, program administrator and director for public and private agencies. I have also worked in jails and prisons with almost every job. I haven't had even a parking ticket since that time.

Does anyone know if countries like Portugal or Uruguay have exceptions to the clean criminal record requirement on a residency application? I have emailed everyone but have not received any responses in regards to this. I was hoping the embassy could help me but perhaps not.

You need legal advice for something this serious. There are immigration lawyers who are licensed in multiple countries. I would start there. Martindale.com may give that information, but you might have to go to a law school to use a more comprehensive Martindale search. I think Uruguay would be more malleable, but that is only a guess.
