He will connect the packet8 hardware to a internet connection. Either DSL or any other high speed internet in El Salvador. Packet8 works just fine with ISDN which is 128k/128k and costs about 20 bucks a month in most of El Salvador, very few areas dont have it. Regular DSL from Claro is 30 so go with it, you need 128k/128k but from claro they offer 256k for i think 30.

Anyway he gets internet, connect the packet 8 to it and when he picks up the phone he has a dial tone. That phone will have a USA phone number, local to you. So he will have a xxx-xxx-xxxx number. He can call you on your US number free, you can call his number, as if it were a US number, because it is.

If he decides to call El Salvador numbers its 0.07 cents a min for landlines and 0.12 for cellulars. Still cheaper than El Salvador cell rates.

If he doesnt get this, it will cost you with your cell from 0.25 to a dollar PER MIN to talk to him. It will cost him 0.10 a min to talk to you. A few conversations and your over the cost of internet + packet8. If you just get p8 or other voip + internet = you can talk unlimited.
hi

I would have no idea, we are still trying to get Claro to come out and install. They said they would come out on Friday even called in the morning at 8 and they never showed. Claro, to my understanding is the best and biggest provider in the country but we wouldn't know!
BTW, we have been waiting 3 weeks!

I live here so ... here is my view on internet here.

There are a few major companies.

+Claro
+Tigo (&Amnet)
+Digicel

They all offer internet. Depending on where your at in El Salvador there are a ton more companies. In San Salvador there are literally almost a hundred.

Everything from satellite internet to wired to wiress.

Tigo + Claro offer wireless for 30 a month. The wired is better for skype and VoIP but whatever will work.

If your in La Libertad, San Salvador or San Miguel ask around, there are PLENTY OF PROVIDERS! Point your loved ones in El Salvador to http://sv.clasificados.st/

Goto computers and look at ads for "internet inlimitado $50 mensuale) etc etc, thats how I got mine.

But claro's 2MBPS plan for 30-40 a month is just fine!

They are a bit slow to install though, as kim mentioned. Sometimes u get 2-3 install dates before someone shows up, it sucks. Usually its not any slower than Verizon in the states though :-S

Can you give me some more details about how you set this up and how it has made your calls so much cheaper? I am so desperate to lower my phone call cost. From what I understand I can set up magic jack with a phone number local to the prison, then I can forward magic jack to my cell phone. Instead of using GTL I can put money on his "books" and he can purchase calling cards. The calls will be substantially less this way. We are 200 miles apart right now and each call is $7.10. Can you tell me if this is all the right idea here? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!!

Whatever you do, don't don't use Lingo phone service, they ripped me off big time. I use Magic Jack, and it's nice not to have to pay but 19 dollars a year, and most places I can call and talk as long as I want. Although, I don't think I can use to talk to someone who is in prison, from what I read. I had boost mobil, cell and was on a 50 dollar plan and I could call long distance anywhere all month, for 50.
