How do you *keep* a quilt?

Hi all.
My mother just gave me *my* quilt. Its absolutely beautiful!!!!!!
She's made lap quilts for a bunch of us kids and her grand kids. But mine she made for my bed.
I told her Im not going to put it on there now for a few reasons, one being my little fur buddy (cat-Oliver) who sleeps with me.
(I also didnt tell her I have not slept IN my bed since my husband was arrested.......I sleep on TOP of it, but not in it)

I was wondering do I need to put the quilt in something special so it does not get wrecked? (waiting til my hubby gets out to sleep under it for the first time)
Or is a plastic tub ok?
