Default Michigan layoffs may occur

-snip-

And the Michigan Department of Corrections is looking at the prospect of closing a prison facility, which might involve layoffs, to save $50 million. That's in addition to $600 million cut in the past seven years.
"We're having discussions today (Thursday) on possibilities," said Russ Marlan, spokesman for the Department of Corrections. "That's a very large sum that's equivalent to the operation costs of two facilities. To be able to hit that target without closing would be extremely difficult.

http://noise.typepad.com/derek_melot...n-savings.html

For the 2011 budget, the governor initially recommended $1.88 billion for the department. The Senate has voted for $1.91 billion. And the House voted for $1.99 billion. In her latest bid to break the budgetary logjam, Jennifer Granholm is advising a $50 million cut for DOC in 2011. So, best case, that’s, what, $1.83 billion?

So that's like a 2.66% cut. Why not 3% like the rest of the departments? Are they trying to make it sound like DOC is taking a bigger hit or a smaller hit compared to the other departments? Politics errrrrr RA

now if they would repeal that TIS and bring back good time and let some of these inmates out that deserve it it would be nice.

It was my understanding that they were getting a 3% raise come October 1st.

I heard this is well about the raise. That would be a mess if that happened. Where will that money come from?

state must have all kinds of money. Seems like there's always money for the things they want. What's the point of closing another prison and staying overcrowded and making it harder on everyone?

two points

1. guys who had been denied boot camp are being allowed to go now - I believe this is to relieve the overcrowding with changing waiting for the politicians to change the laws

2. the 3% raise only applies to unionized staff. All supervisory and contract staff are excluded. And the politicians are still trying to get at that money. If they pass the retirement incentive bill that 3% will not be given to state employees. It will be put into a fund that "could" but probably won't be used for retirement health care. It will probably just be "borrowed" and put back into the general fund. Or as with state employee retirement savings it may be used as a bank account for MEDC who "borrows" the savings and loans it out to business's who promise to bring jobs to Michigan. This idiocy has resulted in turning a "overfunded" account into a "unfunded liability".
