Exclamation Plata/Coleman Questions

Hay PTO!

A buddy of mine is going to have a GREAT opportunity to meet with the lawyers from the Plata/Coleman case. I would like to send out a few questions from us PTO members....got any ideas?

If so, get them to me today...the meeting is tomorrow.

NoBo, also that case comes before the U.S. Supreme Court for arguments Nov. 30th, - I can't wait to see how that goes...
I would give anything to be in washington d.c. on that day, hearing the oral arguments...

It would be great if we could get thirty three (33) representatives there-just enough to get their attention. Each one wearing a T-shirt with the name of a prison on it listing POP capacity and then actual number…Road Trip anyone???

Or….perhaps we could enlist the help of some PTO members from surrounding areas of DC. Maybe even jump this thing up to 50-one for each state’s total POP capacity versus actual POP -- as the decision for CA will set the precedent for all states???
This is sooo DO-ABLE, eh?

i would donate to that cause for sure! ..... however, that's a lot of planning and only 30 days. I wonder if any of the DC folks are going up there???...maybe we should peek into the forum and find out

(Mod's - can the part of this thread that went "off topic" be moved to it's own thread? Maybe titled "Overcrowding Hearing in DC - Need Volunteers" or something to that effect?)

Great idea!!! I don't how many people can actually travel there, though, with the cost and all. I'd go in a heartbeat if I could afford it! But I'm thinking... there are some great advocacy groups in the DC area that might be able to represent for us. I could check out some of them from my fb friends list but before I jump on this we'd need to figure out who would pay for all the T-shirts, etc. Would we pay for them, if someone from the DC area was willing to show for us? They'd get a free T-shirt in exchange for representing our prisons?

What we really need is at least one organization willing to underwrite this and start reaching out to all their fellow advocates. In California we have places like the Ella Baker Center, FACTS, Place4Grace, etc., and nationally there's some places in or near DC like Prison Fellowship, FAMM, and/or CURE, that might be willing to represent for us.

The biggest hurdle will be doing all this in less than 30 days. That could be a problem. And I don't know, but does SCOTUS screw around with their court dates like our state does, or are their dates "set in stone"?

If anyone really wants to pursue this idea, let's message each other and put our heads together. I'm willing to set up a fb group to try and get something going and include a fund-raising "kickstarter" ... but only if there's enough interest from people - and enough other folks willing to help.

The arguments will be about state's rights vs. 3 judge ruling, which CA appealed..HOWEVER it's a golden opportunity for a kick-a** press conference on prison reform on the steps of court... and national coverage.
Trust me, if I could I would be there in a minute - been doing press conferences up and down the state on our advocacy issue, (ending the war on drugs which has lead to mass incarceration of non-violent drug offenders..)
I would LOVE to do this one as all our issues end up with the same result...(as noboundaries says..) AMERICA'S ADDICTION TO INCARCERATION!
...and MADHAT, I just LOVE the sardine can graphic.. the idea is fabulous.

I wonder what agencies that work on prison reform have offices in D.C.? For all we know there may be something already in the works....

Sardines just jumped into my head LOL. But Kima brought up a good point so I did the 2nd one with the guys on Ebeds. The orange color kinda grabs your eye.

I did those quickly - but I can play with the idea and see what I can come up with. I did SATF because that is where my son is, but it is easy to get the stats on each prison so that each prison is represented.

Kima also brought up another option that might be possible. Since everyone cannot afford to go to Washington, DC - would it be possible to get at least one person from every prison wearing t-shirts to Sacramento to be in front of the courthouse where the 3 judges handed down their decision?

I'm sure someone could get the press interested in that LOL
