Default My son was transferred to Two Rivers

At least according to the VINE notification email I just got. I bet he's so disappointed. Since he was setenced and will be released in Clatsop County, he was really hoping he'd get South Fork. I know it's hard to get in there, though.

I looked up as much info as I could find on Two Rivers and it looks really harsh. The website describes it as a facility for long term inmates, so I'm wondering why he ended up there, since his sentence is 18 mos and he's not a violent offender. Can I call the prison directly to find out if he's in minimum or medium?

My husband is also at Two Rivers. He was hoping to end up somewhere else, but what they want isn't taken into consideration, lol. Apparently it's like several mini-prisons together and everyone stays pretty much in their section. My husband is adjusting tho' and I'm sure your son will too.

Anyway, hang in there, he'll be home before too long!

ALmost no one goes to South Fork immediately - South Fork is a Minimum I facility (there are only two in the State) and their guidelines require two months or more at a Minimum II facility before transfer - and that was in 2009, so it might even be a little longer now.

Don't worry about the TRCI thing - sometimes they just have to put someone where there is an open bed, because there are people waiting to get moved to Coffee Creek...He is probably classified at this point medium custody, but he can tell you after talking with his counselor how long it will be until they re-classify him as minimum.

Finally got a phone call today and found out the REAL reason Kyle is at TRCI. He got into a fight with his cellmate at Coffee Creek and was bumped from Min I to Medium. I am furious, disappointed, and sad. If he can't stay out of trouble for one month, what hope is there that he can do it for another 12? So he will be at TRCI for at least six months. I don't know what to think now. I had hope, but it's slipping away.

Some people have to learn the hard way. Fighting will weight against him in the selection process for South Fork - it's a very "select" group of inmates there.

One word of unsolicited "advice" - don't let your feeling state be dependent on Kyle's behavior. You are powerless to change him, and it would be more helpful for both of you to simply step back and watch with as much detachment as you are able to muster...

I wrote a blog a while back I'd like to refer you to...People Do What Works - will you consider the possibility that whatever Kyle's path is right now, he needs to be in the process he is in. It's pretty clear that he has some lessons to learn...and perhaps this detour will help shift him in that direction. That's the really appropriate "hope" to have - that he becomes a person who learns by his experience. It takes some of us a very long time. Believe me, I know

I read that blog (and all the others, too). It was helpful. I even printed it and sent it to Kyle while he was in intake, hoping it might resonate.

He claims his cellmate was a 'hothead' facing 15 years and didn't care about consequences. Of course, Kyle will very likely be in direct contact with other such 'hotheads' and must learn how to handle himself and avoid confrontation.

I do appreciate the advice about stepping back. It is very hard to stay detached in once sense, and yet still provide the emotional connection and support that he needs. It would actually be easier for me to just cut off communication and get off that roller coaster. He left behind two babies and two mothers that are draining me emotionally, as it is.
Finding balance is difficult. But I'll try.Thanks.

And then again - sometimes ya gotta fight if you don't want to be a punk. Prison culture is different and sometimes difficult for us to understand. Until you can visit face to face and talk, you may not learn what really occurred and why. Keep encouraging him to follow the rules but don't be too harsh toward him about his actions until you know more. That's my advice.
