Default moving prisoners from Eldorado and Hutchinson to Texas

In the Kansas City Star today they had an article about moving 48 prisoners out of El Dorado and Hutchinson prisons to Texas. It did not say how soon . But I thought it was interesting they are paying Texas 37 dollars a day to house one prisoner. Because of over crowding.

I don't understand how Texas can take on any more prisoners when they are over crowed with their own. I have a loved one doing time there right now.Tell the loved ones that get moved to be prepared, I have been told that Kansas prisons are like Boy Scout Camp compared to Texas prisons.

Overwhelmed Kansas prisons ship inmates to Texas

Associated Press

WICHITA, Kan. - Kansas, out of space for medium- and maximum-security male
prison inmates, has transferred some to a private prison in Texas.

Forty-eight medium-custody inmates from the state prisons at Hutchinson
and El Dorado were transferred to Texas because of crowding created by a
continuing increase of inmates, said Secretary of Corrections Roger
Werholtz.

Space for medium- and maximum-security male inmates has already run out,
despite projections that indicate the state won't reach its 9,244-bed
capacity until 2007, officials said.

As of Friday, the Hutchinson Correctional Facility central unit was 113
inmates over capacity, the El Dorado central unit was 95 over capacity,
and the Lansing central unit was 10 over capacity, the Kansas Department
of Corrections said.

The situation has prompted the prisons to put more inmates per cell. At
Hutchinson, for example, some four-man cells now have five inmates,
department spokesman Bill Miskell said.

The inmates sent to Texas tend to have less-violent histories, Miskell
said. Officials also tried to send inmates who have not been receiving
regular visitors.

The transfer is part of a contract between Kansas and CiviGenics, the
nation's second largest privately held corrections operator.

Under the contract, Kansas is charged $38.50 a day per inmate. Federal
grants will pay most of the cost, at least for this year, Miskell said.

David Wilkinson, a prison reform advocate with Criminal Justice and Mercy
Ministries of the United Methodist Church of the Kansas West Conference,
said he was not surprised by the transfer.

"I understand the position the KDOC is in" with crowding, he said.

But crowding would diminish if the state provided more resources for
successfully re-integrating ex-convicts into communities, Wilkinson said.

I just talked to my son and he said when Missouri sent prisoners to texas they were in county jails and state prisons where ever there was a bed. He also said a friend of his was send there and they sprayed mace on the prisoners from missouri and beat them . Some of them came home in wheel chairs and there was a class action suite . Some of the men that was crippled was in their 30s and got 30,000 dollars not much if you are in a wheel chair all your life. My son says to write to your congressmen and sentors and every one you know . Oh and they sicked the dogs on them . This does not sound like where I would want my loved one.
Just thought I would let you know.

Yes Missouri brought back ther inmates because of brutality, unfortunately there is no one that looks out for all the others. Texas is not a state that you ever want to due time in. My loved one is doing time in Texas, their unit went on lock down the 30th of Dec. and just now got off. Therefor they only got sack meals three times a day, nothing hot. To me this should be considered cruel and unusual punishment. Inmates in Texas are treated worse than animals. They make up their own rules as they go along or whatever fits the point they are trying to make with no reasons given. They do what them want when they want.

Texas likes offenders that don't have any or very little contact with the outside world. That way they more or less have a free hand without inquiries as to whats happening to their love ones. I wish everyone that gets moved good luck and a safe stay in Texas. I'm not trying to upset anyone but know how the Texas system is I've benn dealing with them for ten years now and not through yet.

Does anyone know how we would go about getting these guys back here to Kansas, I have called just about everyone I can think of , from the Governor, the Senator, and the sentencing commission.. I have got no answers, just the run around! Any Ideas??

Casners wife,
What I would do is call the governer Sibilius and tell her I know how the prisoners in Missouri were treated when they were in Texas and I do not want a repeat of it. I would lay it on the line. If they can not keep prisoners in Kansas then they need to quit filling up the prisons or build new ones. They take these men and women out of working force and through them in prison and then hollar they do not have money to house them. I call this totally insane. Our system needs something new. This country is failing in the judical system . I would contact all thoes people and explain to them that this is not the answer to their over crowding the system .
Keep in contact with your friend in Texas so he has some contact with someone. They usually pick on the ones they think will not have contact.

Dannysmom,
You have good ideas! I have written to the governor, and the Attorney General, and the Senator, and the prison commission, and I have several of the guys they sent to Texas, writing letters also. And their families too!! Any help from anyone else who would write letters to our senators, legislatures,gonernor.. would be much appreciated! Have you heard about that bill 2777? or the McAdam ruling?

everyone,

I worked in El Dorado when some of the guys found out they were leaving. They got an information packet (rules and stuff) and there were some pretty strict rules. No facial hair was kinda weird. It even said no tv's! Who knows if that all happened for real, but if those rules were enforced it makes me wonder what else they were subject to. So lots of the guys tried to get off the list to go. I just thought I would I say stay strong!
