I have never been there as I live out of state but my bf's mother goes almost every weekend. My bf said they say it is one of the easier prison's but that isn't saying much. They have their share of trouble and trouble makers but nothing like most facilities. They have state inmates and TDCJ inmates that are in different color uniforms. Bartlett has many faith based classes with some wonderful preachers according to my bf. They currently offer computer classes but don't know if that will change with the budget cuts. My bf's mother said they go early to visitation or else it can be a long wait. The CO's vary some are nice some are barking orders.

Welcome to PTO. Not many people go on Bartlett's thread but you can also check out many of the other threads under Texas. As a mom I know it can be very stressful. Your son just needs to watch out who he hangs with because it that atmosphere it is hard to know who to trust. Your son will learn how to make it.

Hello,
My husband did a year in Bartlett and got out in 2009. This is of course a state jail facility. If your son stays to himself he should do just fine. My husband made friends and still did fine. So either way he will be okay. I always sent my husband food money because he said their meals aren't so filling there. He was 20 when he went in and turned 21 right before he got out, and eats a ton.
Visits are 3 contact and one non contact a month on Saturdays and Sundays, it's about 45 minutes from Georgetown and it's of course in Bartlett which is literally right beside Jarrell, you just have to take the Jarrell exit. The mail usually takes about two days both ways, sometimes it takes a day.
Oh and about visits you can take up to 10 dollars in quarters with you, I also got there early and to make sure you get in every single time, I would wear tennis shoes, jeans, and a tshirt, and just bring your quarters, keys and your license. Your license and visitation lists have to match. It takes about 30 days for intake, but he can recieve letters as soon as you send them and get his tdcj number. So send them as soon as possible, because that first month is lonely. I would call the jail after 3 weeks to see if the visitation list is in yet. But you will get your first contact visit after 30 days. Also the above person was correct they have state jail inmates and tdcj inmates, the state jail side are in orange and the tdcj side are in blue. If you go to visit get there early. I used to get there about 7 so I could be one of the first in line, because right before my hubby got out they started checking vehicles. You will have to wait in your car until you are one of 3 people to go up to the door, they will check you in and do a pat search after walking through the metal detector. A word of advice, please as kind as you can to them, even if they are rude to you, they will be, but after seeing you for a while they will become nicer each time. Believe me I know, I was pregnant when my husband went in and then had the baby while he was in, and after they started seeing me every week, they were especially nice, even wanting to hold the baby after I had him.

There are alot of people out there who know more and who be glad to help you, I met alot of wonderful ladies. PM if you need anything else. I will be glad to help you, I researched as much as I could when my husband went and I learned alot from this site. Let me know if you need anything else.

Unfortanutely he is heading back to prison, but your son will be just fine. My husband told me to tell you that it's really laid back there and most everyone is cool. Even the guards are nice to them... but of course there are some that are not, but that's everywhere you go. I wish him the best of luck and like I said anything that you need just let me know and I can either answer it or find the answer for you! Best of luck to both of you.
