Default Intro--melisaram from Virginia

Hi all! My son just got moved to Bland it will be his first experience in prison. Im really scared for him. He is to out going and friendly and very trusting, I think he need to keep to himself and just do his time. He is scheduled for release in May 2012 so hes not really a long timer. I think that is a long time though but compared to some I guess not.

He has been in jail for almost a yr waiting for sentencing. He is sort of glad to be moved, but Im just not sure this will be a good move. He was at Haysi jail and it was not alot of fun, but he was use to the place. The visitation will be different and Im sort of looking forward to getting to see him for over 15 mins a week. I will have to drive almost 2 hrs farther to go see him so I might not get there every week. Im just really scared for him and feel so helpless

I know you're scared for him, but he'll be ok. Prison is so much better than county jail: more programs & classes, more freedom of movement; more & better commissarry. I feel ya on the drive time for visits.....I haven't seen My Mr since December because of the distance, well, more because of the financial part of it

I see you've located the Virgina forum You may also want to stop in the Parents with Children in Prison forum.....there's a whole lot of strength there to ehlp you on this journey. Welcome to PTO

Welcome to PTO, glad to have you join us. There is nothing like a mother's love! I know your son is happy to have your support. It's important for people serving time to have a good support system. I know you will enjoy the prison visits more. although a longer drive) You will at least have more than 15 mins and also get a hug in. Patchouli gave you a very helpful link to a wonderful forum. Again welcome to the community, before you know it your son will be back home.

Hello and welcome to PTO. So glad you found us but sorry your son is locked up. I am a mother too and yes this is a scary journey. Please check out the Parents Forum that Patch gave you above. There are lots of moms there just like you that have a child in prison anywhere from 6 months to life. No one knows exactly how painful this sentence is on us as well as our kids. Please let us help you through this.

Diane

I am from VA also, familiar with the VA system. Let me tell you, if they made it through the jail generally the prison is cleaner and less things happen. Not saying that nothing happens, but most of the guys would rather be in prison than the jails. It will be okay, don't worry. My fiance' has been the VA prison system for awhile now, and has been fine! Welcome to PTO, and the VA forum!

Just thought I would update you all he is just going to Bland for a stop over. He will be going to a Level 3 prison. He said he couldnt have visitors if he wasnt there for 60 days since he wouldnt be staying there. I have to call them back tomorrow because when I received the letter it was to late to call. I was told yesterday I could visit this week end.

I'm not familiar with Virginia, but in KY an inmate cannot have visits nor even get a visiting form for family/friends for the first 60 days after they arrive at the Assessment & Classification facility. That's standard procedure here. My Mr finished his 60 days, sent me the form and was transferred to his "home" prison before I could even get the form sent back in. However, if that happens, you can apply for visits when they get to their home prison.
