Hello.. this is my first post so hopefully I'm doing this right. I served several years in FPC Bran. Your mom will be fine... I will try to answer some of your questions. Visitation is every weekend 8-3:30 Indoor and outdoor weather permitting. No BBQs but they have decent vending machines (expensive) she can purchase lots of things... makeup, flat irons, etc. Hair dryer are provided in the restrooms. She cannot smoke, in free time, sh can take all kinds of classes, workout, walk the track, etc. For prison, its not too bad. Most the staff are.decent and this time will be behind you before you know it.

I was at Bryan from January 2009 until July 2010. That was on a 24-mo. sentence. Your mom will get approx. 3 months "good time", which means she will serve approx 15 months. That will include any halfway house (HH) time she might get. For example, if she gets 2 months HH, she will spend 13 months at Bryan and 2 months at HH. And, I know this will be hard to believe, but every single person I've talked with would rather have done all their time at the facility, instead of being in halfway house.

When I left, the cosmetology students were still coloring ladies' hair, and doing hair cuts. Everything is subject to change. She'll be able to buy makeup and hair products. There is a library, chapel, track, exercise classes, and GED classes if she needs them. Unless she has a medical reason, she will have a job and earn real money, though not very much. She'll start at 12 cents/hr. There are many very nice ladies there. I made very good friends, some are still there.

Pls ask any other questions. I'm happy to share what I know.

I've never posted here, hope I'm doing this right. I have a question about the halfway house. My mom has the option of going to one and then sent on house arrest. She's been at Bryan FPC for 2 months and hasn't heard many good things about half way houses. Are they worse than staying where she is?

I'll try and answer as many of your questions as I can. She will do 85% of her sentence. The eligibility rules with regard to Half-Way Houses changed in the last year so I don't know if any of that 85% will include HWH time. There is no smoking anywhere. Hair salon services are available. All hair products are purchased at the store the week before your hair appointment. Blow dryers are available in all vanity areas of restrooms. Flat irons, make-up and recreational clothing may be purchased at the store. Everyone is required to hold down a job, but the pay is negligible compared to similar jobs on the outside. It helps the time pass, though. The staff do bbq once or twice a year on certain holidays. Visitations are Sat/Sun from 8am-5pm, and are in an open area with the option to visit outside in a little park-like area. Also, a fairly decent gym is available for her to use. She will find treadmills, stair-steppers and weight machines. There are quite a number of arts & crafts classes that she may enjoy. The library is sufficiently stocked. She can read the daily newspapers there or order her own subscription.
All in all, she will do fine. Bryan is a camp so it's relatively low-key. Some of the employees are difficult, but she will soon learn who to avoid.
I hope this answers your questions.
