Default So hot at visit, no fans & mandatory long-sleeves for inmates?

I went to visit with my son yesterday in NH and was flabbergasted at how hot inside it was for them......and what does he walk in with but a t'shirt and a long sleeve shirt. You have to wear a long sleeve shirt for anytime you go to chow and visits. He was sweating right through his clothes.....he has to wear the tshirt as the shirts are so scratchy to wear alone. I had to ask why the long sleeves.....can't they either provide a short sleeve shirt or allow them to buy one from canteen......geesh.

The whole building was not like that though....the lobby and offices were obviously ridiculously chilled but once you went through the iron door it was stifling.......and no fans anywhere. The only fans they have are those mini personal fans they have by their beds.

12 men started a hunger strike in the Concord State Prison as the heat was so bad in the SHU unit where they are locked up for 23 hours a day in a concrete, no window cell. If we treated one of our animals like that we would have them taken away but it is okay to treat people like that???

They say that they put fans out there and had to take them away when asked, for safety concerns. It is funny how they can get hold of them in the first place being locked up so long and guards watching them. Why not install ceiling fans to get some air circulating in the outside areas if they can't afford air conditioning.

I wondered what other prisons were like and what they do for the heat.....we have had an unusually extended heat wave this summer as I am sure many other areas are experiencing also.

It does not create a safe environment as tempers I am sure must flare in this stuff.....and why does office staff get air and not just fans if they truly are trying to save money?

In the visiting area it was so hot I had to bring my granddaughter into the rest rooms to splash some water on her and give her a wet paper towel she was so flushed hanging around there just for 4 hours.

I feel bad for all those guys in there being treated like that.

I realize just how bad it is this year. At visits they have to where the "dress uniforms" ours are white scrubbs tee shirt underneath. Its extremely hot and they don't even have a water fountain, to get water. We sit out side as at least its fresh hot air!! haha I don't know if there is anything that could be done, in the winter its worse I think they have freezing air comming through broken windows, clothing that tey are issued is not meant as protection for cold we're in south florida!! Some places the heat is so bad they are having people die from it and they are making these guys wear polyester uniforms its like puting a plastic bag over and boiling them!! I wish I had an idea, I just don't! My guy say's not to come as much, but its hard not to when I am able to get a ride!

If they can't have fans why don't they have at least ceiling fans put in? Ridiculous in buildings with no windows or barred closed windows and wearing long sleeves. No wonder my son was not too excited about us coming......though he did not complain at all while we were there......I was doing the complaining.

They at least should be concerned about the breeding ground for germs they are creating in that hot environment.

Many people, even seniors have no air conditioners on the outside. I don't think you're ever goingtowalk into a cool prison, except in the winter. Budgets are strained and they are not going to waste money on it. My hubby is in SHU in a metal room that gets so hot, but its not going to change. If people on the outside don't even have air-here in NYC they have cooling centers that you have to go to-you are not going to find much sympathy for those jailed.

Maybe not a/c our local high schools don't have a/c but I think they atleast need to have fans.

Oh my, don't even get me started on how they have no a/c for these men. My friend is in Texas and they also do not have a/c and he says it is so unbearable. I just can't imagine being in a cell w/50 other hot men. I can see why fights are breaking out all the time. It is a shame that they are treated so badly just because they are in jail. I know the humane societys are a/c for the animals which I have NO complaint on that I am glad they treat animals well cause they can't look out for themselves. But I do think it is wrong to treat any human being whether they committed a crime or not to make them suffer in the heat with no ventilation and no A/C.The facility my friend is in they can't even buy the personal fans it is not allowed.....But at my BF facility they do have A/C so go figure, some can have it and others can't....I realize some people on the outside don't have air but they do have the option to buy an a/c or if they can't afford one there family can provide one for them.....These Men do not have the option.

Not even asking for air conditioning.......fans to help circulate the enclosed, hot, humid, congested areas.......YES! We would not put a dog in a 6x10 concrete interior with a barred window in a 90 degree hot humid day and call that humane. Why would we treat people that way?

Nope in a lot of place if we did that to an animal we would be sitting in jail or facing a steep fine.

My mans prison had the exact opposite problem in the winter time. he has to walk down from another building to the visiting one.. it gets cold in Alberta in the winter and he isn't allowed to wear an undershirt, jacket or anything more than a short sleeve white tee to visit. I felt awful, I'd show up in a sweater and everything, and my poor bae comes down with red ears, and shivering

Went with my mother to visit with my son last weekend.....they actually had air conditioning in the visitors room! I was actually cold..haha. I couldn't believe it.
Some new policy he said having to have air in areas that are open to the public.

I guess all the letters and phone calls complaining finally got some attention! Or maybe some "suit" was there and finally realized people were not lying about how the waiting room was so hot. I am glad to hear people will be more comfortable now while waiting. Hope your visit was good!

They have an interim new warden up there as Mr. Blaisdell has retired.

ya....concrete buildings with very little windows.....they wouldn't put a dog in such conditions. How many don't have money to purchase even a little teeny fan? Last year I read some areas aren't even allowed fans.
