I started doing time in May of 1986. I recently got out in July. During my varies tours of incarceration. I have been to Jameson Annex units A, B & C in Sioux Falls. As well at several years behind the walls. Springfileld, Redfield Trusty Unit, West farm. Which closed several years ago and Yantkon Trusty Unit.

Springfield is the best place to do time in the South Dakota system.
Also has the most cable tv channels to watch.

By far Spingpatch is the place to do time in the south dakota department of corrections. Mininimum security units are slave labor camps. Years ago you received alot of extra priveleges by being a trusty at a minimum unit. Monthly furloughs, visitors could bring you burger king etc. Now it's just a place for the system to pack inmates in like tuna fish and make them work super hard each day for a quarter an hour. No extra perks besides being able to go outside during the day.

Well...my best friend has been away now for almost 3 months...hopefully he will be returning home in 6 months...but thats up to the parole board...He is currently in Springfield...I'm new to dealing with all this...trying to just take it one day at a time....

Taking it one day at a time is the best. And you have plenty to be thankful for. 6 months really isn't that bad. Springfield is the best place to do time in the system.

i dont know exactly where my husband will be going yet but it most likly he will be going.does anyone know about the rapid city trustee unit i havent heard any thing about that one yet....do they move people in prison around to differnt places alot? im new to this and dont know anything

Well my man is in Sioux falls at the hill and is looking at some major time. We havent been to trial yet so we dont have a date or a number. Anyone else that has a loved one there go ahead and PM me if you want to talk.

My husband is in Springfield. The visitations are Fri 6:45p to 8:45p, Sat and Sunday there are three different times 9a to 11:15a, 12:45p to 3:00p or 6:45p to 8:45p. You can only go to two but not the morning and afternoon either the morning and night or the afternoon and night. They are switching the phone systems around to a company so all the prison will take is comminsary money the phones I think switch around the 5th. There are no snacks pop or anything in the visiting room so you can't bring money. Not sure what else you would need to know but that is the general. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. They have papers he can send you to with any information you might need to know.

My boyfriend just left Mar 16 for Sioux Falls. I don't know where he will be yet he is in his A&O time. This is really hard for me, but i am trying to stay strong for him. He was sentenced to do 4 years, but we were told after court he would likely sit 35%, but in his letters he is telling me 1 year 8 1/2 months before he can possible come home, which would be 50% since he sat 3 1/2 in county before sentencing. I am lost...

If during sentencing the judge did not specify your BF is to receive credit for jail time served. He won't get any credit.
Usually within a week of arriving at Jameson in Sioux Falls he will get a computer print out with the exact day he will be paroled if he follows the rules and treatment plans.

16.8 months is what he has to serve.

my son was just stenced to 3 years they will be taking him to jameson unit to the fish tank until they tell him where he is going. he is 21 and never been in trouble before iam so scared can someone please tell what will happen to him and how likley it will be that he gets beat up or killed or anything i watch these shows on prison life and they scare me bad please any info will help my son was really steanced to 15 years then the judge cut that down to 71/2 then down to 3 years 6 months but was given credit for 6 months will he be able to get out before the 3 years

My husband has been in Springfield, and will be heading back there sometime in the next few months most likely... Springfield is a Medium Security unit... As for phone calls, they can use the phone from like 7 or 8 in the morning until 10 at night, and as long as you're putting money on the phone account, they can call as often as they want during that time. Visitations are Friday evening, and then they offer a morning and an afternoon visit on Saturday and Sunday. You can go to only 1 of the visits on saturday/sunday... so you can go Friday, Sat, and sunday... but not to all 5 visits. They are allowed letters/pictures... just make sure you limit the amount of pictures you send as they are only allowed a certain amount! If you want to send books or things like that, you will need to order them from somewhere like Borders or Amazon and have them sent directly to him.

When you go to visit, you can show up an hour early... and I would suggest getting there at least 30 minutes early as people will start lining up! The morning visits are usually less populated.

Your son will be ok! If he is down to 3 years, depending on his sentence, he will probably go to a minimum security unit. I haved watched the Lock Up shows and others like that, and I assure you that South Dakota prisons are nothing like that! There are fights, and there are problems, but most people are just there to do their time and get out! I hope everything works out for him!

Friend of mine named Brad is sitting in Watertown Jail waiting to go to the pen.
He was sentenced yesterday morning and should be going to the fishtank this week.
