Default Doing TDC time in a state jail

When they transfer a TDC person (who has no state jail sentence) to a state jail, is it because they don't have space in actual TDC units? And do the guys doing TDC in a state jail always get transferred again? Or is it likely they'll serve their whole sentence in the state jail?

Some state jails house tdc and state jail inmates. From my knowledge an inmate can stay at a state jail up to 2yrs. I say 2 years because my husband time at his current location is almost up and he has been there almost 2 years. Some people stay longer if they have no where for them to go. There is a chance that they whole sentence can be served is State Jail.

TDCJ Offenders are housed at State Jails and are separated from State Jail Offenders and wear wrist bands so that they identified as a TDCJ Offender . TDCJ uses State Jails as Transfer Units and can be housed at a Transfer Unit for up to 2 years and no longer. After the 2 years is up or close they will transfer to an ID Unit. As long as a TDCJ Offender is housed at a Transfer Unit or any Unit they can be transferred to any TDCJ Unit. It's just kind of a guessing game with things. Most of the time once they switch from a Transfer Unit to an ID Unit they will stick to the ID Unit as their permanent unit unless they do something that will get them transferred.

A TDCJ Offender can serve their Sentence at a State Jail and be paroled out of a State Jail and be denied parole housed at a State Jail.

When I went back into the system on a parole violation in ’07, I was surprised that they sent me to Hutchins State Jail and Dawson State Jail to do my time. I started out at Gurney for 2-3 weeks, went to Hutchins for another month and then spent the next 22 months at Dawson State Jail. Dawson actually has more male i.d. prisoners than it does male state jail prisoners. It’s probably the only unit that I know of where you see men and women both that are i.d. & state jail offenders. The female state jail prisoners out number female i.d. prisoners and of the 8 floors that actually house prisoners, female state jail prisoners make up the majority of all 4 groups.

Among i.d. prisoners that go there on a new sentence, they can be held 2 years on transfer status eligibility. Those of us there on a parole violation though can be held I guess for the duration of the violation where ever TDCJ chooses to assign us. I saw a handful of men there on parole violations who’d been there 4 years around 2008 and 09.
