Question Doing time to "cop out" of probation?

My boyfriend violated probation which was supposed to be 1 year. He is in Middleton County Jail in Massachusetts and his cell mate told him that he could "cop out." Meaning he would do 30-45 days in jail and when he's released he will be free from probation. Is this true? Also he said he thinks they are going to put him out on pre-release because the jail is so overcrowded. Does anyone know anything about the pre-release program?
