Default "Eye in the Sky"

I don't know if you all are aware of this, as I was not. Three prisons have new video surveillance systems installed, those units are Darrington, Polunsky, and Stiles. The sytem will catch assaults on staff and offenders as well as other incidents. This system could be beneficial all the way around for everyone, if those digital images were easily obtained if need be. What are your thoughts on this??

It’s not a bad idea and it could make a difference where one person’s word against another is concerned where cases and that sort of thing is concerned. It would act as a way to keep people honest and that’s always a good thing.

Now if only they would hire people to monitor those cameras. Stiles has 86 new ones installed so far.

TDCJ hand, wouldn't it take less people actually walking around observing the actions going on, and those people could monitor the screens? Are you saying all this money that went into installing the cameras was not put to good use, since there are not enough people to monitor the screens? Maybe they should have only done one unit on a trial run then huh?

In theory, yes, hopefully they cannot be accidently lost or otherwise compromised. You know they forget to turn on the camera sometimes in patrol cars, all kinds of things can happen. There also may still be areas that are known to not have a camera. I guess we will see how much use these are. Like I said they could be benificial on both sides.

They already have the bare minimum of staff (often not even the minimum required by policy) so they cannot afford to pull them to monitor cameras. A camera is not a good replacement for a person, especially since they are not wired for sound.
Most patrol cars, the camera automatically comes on when the lights are activated. I see what you are saying though.

It seems like as long as they are on, no person sitting there to monitor would be needed. Much like a security camera in a convenience store, when an incident happens, they go to the tape and pull up the time frame in which it was to have occurred. They would only have to look at the footage, assuming the footage is kept on a tape somewhere, it seems pointless to have cameras there watching with no film in them, kinda pointless and waste of money.

Yes, I see what you are saying and agree. No need to sit and constantly watch a monitor, whoever had that job would probably be snoozing anyway. I hope the heck these cameras are better than the ones they show on tv where a bank or store is robbed. With all the technology you would think they could get cameras with sharp, clear pictures that someone could possibly identify that person if indeed we ran across them.

Wow, cameras everywhere. There are some at red lights here in Austin, some at known drug dealing spots, some on 6th st., in the stores, in the parking lots, pretty soon there will not be a place in the world that is not on camera. Kinda scary.

Luther has had some cameras for some time. There was one right over my son's bunk ... watching everything that happened including anything any where near my son. He hated it ... but I slept easier knowing that if anything happened, there would be evidence. Nothing ever did. ;0) Well, except for one time when my son was threatened with a false case ... and I called the Warden on duty immediately and asked him to go look at the tape ... he did, and the case was dismissed on the spot. :0) They're not always a bad thing.

My boyfriend is in Stiles and was threatened with a false case too (threatened an officer) and wasn't near the officer that was threatened. I also called the warden and they looked at the tape and still gave him the case. He file an appeal and was denied. He filed a second appeal and now he's waiting to see what the outcome of that. Sometimes cameras are good and they're bad. But I hope and pray they dismiss this case.

Sadly, it sounds like in this case the camera isn't bad, the people are ...
