Default General Case Law Question

Hi all,

I've been reading a number of threads on here recently to get a better grasp of how the appeal process goes and thank you all I'm starting to get a handle on it. I'm a little confused, however, about the use of case laws in arguments/briefing. In order to reference a case law, does it have to be from a case in that particular state? Our case in Florida, so I'm curious if we then can only look to case laws based on trials in Florida.

I know different states have different regulations but then I think about something like Miranda Rights...isn't that based on a case law? I use this example because it's a very familiar right that applies nationwide but I'm about 90% sure that's it's based on a case law from a particular state.

Furthermore, if case laws are state-specific, then where do case laws from federal cases fit in? I feel like I'm just confusing myself unnecessarily and would love for some insightful person to break it down for me as I buckle down and do some research for our case.

Thanks in advance.
