Default Prerelease/transfer unit - what's the difference? And how to find JPay code

On the TDCJ website, it says the Segovia unit is a prerelease. On the same website, a different page calls it a transfer unit. What is the difference? Which one is it actually?

I think it's both. A transfer unit is a place where they ship inmates who are in transit (going from one unit to another). A pre release unit is where they put inmates who are close to being granted parole. I think it depends on the inmate's particular situation. I'm not sure if I've helped much!

If they are transferring, how long do they usually stay?

Usually it's one or two days, maybe just a night. If there's a weekend involved, it might be all weekend. But the Texas Tour can happen for a while, going to a bunch of units. He will eventually settle somewhere! Try to be patient. I'v heard that JPay knows where he is sometimes before the TDCJ website. Good luck!

He been there for about two weeks now. Guess he there until TDCJ decides we are content and accept it. Right? Thank you for the information. Some things they do/say are just confusing.

I know regular TDCJ inmates can (and do) stay at transfer facilities for up to two years. This may be his final stop, but they may move him again, too.

I never used JPay, so I don't really know the answer to that question (hopefully someone will come along with more specific answers - I changed the title to try to get more responses!), but there is a two letter facility code somewhere on your end that tells you & Jpay which unit to send the email to. I hope this helps!!

He is close to the mexico border but his release address is by ft worth. We are praying they move him this way soon. Who knows. The code gives me a lil Morris info to look for on jpay. Thank you for all you info.

I'm not finding anything about the 2 letter code on my Jpay account but here's what Jpay says in there Q& A section:

How do I know where my inmate is located?
  • You can get this information either by talking to the inmate, by looking on the outside of an envelope that the inmate has previously sent, by calling the facility, or by checking online for public offender records.

I can't do the Jpay letters anymore, but IIRC, you can find the code by composing a letter (don't have to actually type anything, just hit create, compose, whichever one it is). Then preview the letter. At the top is a facility code. Sorry if this is unclear, but we haven't had Jpay available for about 4 months so my memory is a little foggy. Hopefully someone else will come along and make better sense of what I wrote.

You do have to type at least one character in order to preview but yes it'll show the unit and even his room number. Mine even specifies that he's in high security

I found out my Fiance was being transfered this past friday. When I called TDC they couldnt tell me where he moved because the computers were off. So when I wrote him on Jpay before I sent it, I pressed the "preview" option and on the preview page, on the top left hand corner there is the Unit Code. The unit directory on the TDCJ website has all of the Units with the Unit Codes.

Thanks! I couldn't remember if you had to type anything or not. I miss the Jpay option.

Now I have a new question.

Since I was told the other day that my guy would be moving from Holliday this week, I've been checking the "preview" on my Jpay letters before I send them and this morning the dorm number and bed number were gone, but it still has the code for Holliday. Does anyone happen to know what this means? I'm not sure if I should send the email or not now.

He did catch chain to the Mineral Wells unit and they don't have Jpay email service there, so I guess I will print it out and mail it in snail mail! Back to the slow process.

My husband was at mineral wells but due to a guard being a dick and claiming my man was family they moved him down south 23 miles from the TX/Mexico border which is 8hrs away when he was 15minutes from home. It's made me sick. I called the warden there too and gave him a piece of my mind. Mineral wells is a rough place. They fight constantly and the guys there always have their guard up and are having to watch their back. It's known at the Gladiator camp and it lives up to its name. They have No jpay access so for mail you are back to snail mail. The visits are often freezing cold as the inside visitation room is tiny so they put people outside and due to the facility being in a valley the wind is awful and makes cold days even colder, but if you set up a prepaid account with Securus they can call cell phones. That is 1 good thing. Here is the Securus number 1-800-844-6591.

Maybe it's different depending on the dorm but from all I've seen and heard its a rough joint. I sure liked visiting other units better.

My husband has been at mineral wells for 19 months and has never had any trouble. As my husband explains it, these are guys just trying to get home.
