Default Tell me your stories

Hi everyone. My name is Brett and am a Criminology student at the University of Oklahoma. I am a senior and am working on getting my degree at the end of this semester. In order to do that, I need to do a senior Capstone project. I have had a brother that has been in and out of jail myself, so I am doing my project on what effects inmates have had on their family, ESPECIALLY siblings. I can definitely relate to you guys in understanding how hard it is when a brother (or family member) is locked up. Although my brother has never been in prison, I have had a little taste of how difficult it can be. If you guys would like to participate, I would love to hear your stories and learn what kind of effects your family member has had on you since they got locked up. Whether it be negative or positive, I’m here to listen and learn from you all. If you’re uncomfortable posting here, feel free to private message me. Thanks guys!

My younger sister has been incarcerated since 2010 from an incident that happened in 2009 where my 16 mth old twin niece had drown. My sister is incarcerated for charges of neglect. This incident has not only changed my WHOLE family's situation but has opened our eyes to so many things and has totally changed the way we think and live our lives. It has made me realize how people see people who are incarcerated and how they are put in stereo types, how sideways our justice system is, how prejudice common people in our community are, etc....that's just the beginning of the list. This situation has really recreated me into who I am now.

Advisory for PTO Members Regarding Requests from Journalists & Members of the Media, and Students/Researchers:

PTO welcomes journalists and/or members of the media to learn and educate themselves about prisons, prisoners, and their loved ones, as well as students and researchers doing research on these subjects.

We will, occasionally, allow the media or students/researchers to request information and personal stories from our members. However, PTO does not endorse any journalist, member of the media, story/report, media outlet, student/researcher, or educational/research institution.

If you decide to communicate with a media representative or a researcher, then you assume all of the risks involved. PTO is in no way liable for the outcome of the story/report/paper. Communication with members of the media and students/researchers is completely voluntarily and PTO holds no responsibility for the consequences of that communication.

PTO does not screen or authenticate any person(s) claiming to be from the media or from an educational/research institution, nor does PTO authenticate their motivations for obtaining the information.

As always, the disclosure of personal information (either yours or someone that is incarcerated) may have some serious repercussions. PTO has no way of predicting how the media or any researcher will present your story or that of your loved one. Any relationship with the media or any researchers is to be entered into at your own risk.

If you receive an unsolicited email or private message from a person claiming to be from the media or researching information for an educational or research institution, report it to the PTO Administration immediately.

Btw everyone, the only person that will see anything that you send me in a private message will be me and my professor (so she can review my research and give me a grade of course). Of course, if you do prefer to post on here for the public and rest of the forum to see, I cannot keep your stories anonymous.

Anyways, I have been exploring this forum the last few days and am very impressed with the information and help that it provides. Everyone with a loved one that is locked up should know about this place. I wish I could reach out and help everyone on here that is going through an emotional rollercoaster!

Thank you for the reply Lindsay, and I hope to hear more stories. God bless

thanks to everyone that has messaged me their stories, it's helped me a lot, and I hope it helped you all get a lot of things off your chest. If anyone else still wants to reply, feel free! I'm always open to learning more about how lives have been changed since loved ones have been locked up.
