Is prison good or bad for your sibling?

After my brother was locked up this past time, he has tried to change a little bit because he knew he wasn't going to catch anymore breaks. Next time he would get locked up for a LONG time. So it's been good for him. It's helped him be a little more aware of how his wrongdoings (specifically drinking and drugs) affects the people around him and hurt his family more than anything. I was just curious if anyone felt that their brothers or sisters needed to stay in prison for what they have done and if they think that it will help them learn anything.
