Default millhaven questions

I have so many questions about Millhaven b/c my fiance has just been sent there. I want to know more about the visitation process, I've heard that the 1st visit is behind glass, but then how soon can I have a real visit?

As for your friends tests, he would be going through assesment which would include C.A.T. test and C.A.P.S test, which are tests used to determine your educational level and needs(anything less then a grade 10 level, will require the inmate to do educational training while incarcerated). CAPS is a basicaly a vocation test, to see what type of jobs you would do well in.

One other important facet of Millhaven is Orientation. Orientation is a three day process. It takes place in a classroom setting, and is used to familarize inmates, with the Federal Correctional System.

While at Millhaven its a good idea to work as you will make $5.80 a day, your friend is in the kitchen so he will work every other day and get paid for 20 days a month.
His living unit would be 2D, which is allright except its double bunked, except for the clerks and the 2 head cooks.
Tell your friend to keep his nose clean if he can, as good behaviour is rewarded by be classfied to a lower security institution.

If you have any more questions, just ask?
I was at Millhaven from July 2004 to Oct 2004 then moved on to Frontenac, now on parole.
wow i am so happy i found this forum, I am from hamilton as well and my bf is being sent to millhaven for reception and then he said he will most likely go to frontenac, I am just wondering how the visits are ..i mean if i am driving from hamilton there i dont want to get there to only see him for 20mins like here in hamilton. he says because he has no violence on his record that he should be out in 6 months for parole he is being given 2 years plus a day. I am just scared of him in there because it is MILLHAVEN ..lol but like i have seen the advice given my man is one of those guys you look at and would NEVER guess hes ever done a crime in his life! ..lol he keeps out of peoples business but at the same time hes a nice and friendly guy ..he also said that he will be on lockdown for the first 2 months for 22 hours a day? IS THAT TRUE???? how is Frontenac? is that a hard place too?

Default Millhaven reception, Frontenac Camp

For anyone asking questions about Milhaven reception; in order to get there, you must come from a pre-trial centre. Milhaven reception is a thousand times better place to be than the pre-trial centre...

If an inmate didn't have problems in pre-trial, he certainly isn't going to have problems at Milhaven.

As for Frontenac, it's a little hard to get approved for, as everyone wants to go there. It does not get any better than Frontenac, for an inmate it is the best prison in Ontario, with the most freedom, easiest time, experienced staff. So as far as avoiding trouble, almost nothing happens at Frontenac that would put an inmate at risk. Nobody wants to get sent to a higher security over a simple fight.

my son will be shipped to Millhaven tomorrow. I have gone through a number of sites but am unable to find anything about how we can help him with his canteen funds, etc. What can he take with him from the holding centre now? Should we arrange to pick up his belongings? Will he need things like his health card?

To send funds you have to mail him money orders only. NO cheques or cash at all. Make the money orders in his name. Millhaven then deposits in an account for him to use. Canteen orders are the 2nd or 3rd Wednesday of the month (if Im not mistaken) They can then order their hygene products, food, and calling cards. I would suggest that he order a calling card asap. I just received my first bill from Bell one month of 5min collect calls a day cost me over $600. Whatever belonging he has with him now will be transfered and kept for him at Millhaven. Im sorry I havent a clue about his health card he will have to ask about that when he gets there. My hubby never asked for me to give him his and I never looked in his wallet to see if Ihad it or if he does. Until he gets transfered to his "mother " prison (the place he will be going after Millhaven) he is not allowed to have anything with him. You will be able to mail him letters and plain cards and send pictures when he arrives to Millhaven though.

anymore questions dont hesitate to ask Ill try to answer them
Nicky

Thank you so much Nicky. We are at a loss as to what we can do for him to help him through this process and you have helped. We are getting mixed messages regarding how long he has to stay at Millhaven before he goes to the next institution. It is his intention (hopefully it keeps up) to get help for an addiction and I believe he can do this through day parole and go to Stonehenge. I don't know anything about how this works and what we can encourage him to do for this to become a reality.

thank you so much for your quick answer. We will make that arrangement. Do you know how his stay at Millhaven works? We have received information that he may be there anywhere from 60 days to 4 months

My husband was told anywhere from 3-6months. His cellmate was there for 31/2 months till he left last week. This is our first experience with the prison system and it is scary and confusing. I have read that they have great programs for differnt needs. My husbands lawyer did say though that day parole is risky. There has been times that the men out on day parole have been used to carry drugs out and in of prison. Please be careful with that. Im sure its not a common thing but his lawyer wanted us to know that it has happened. If you intend on visiting your son at Millhaven there is a form youll need to fill out and send in asap. it takes 4-6 weeks to get approved for visitations. Your son will when he gets to Millhaven be asked for phone numbers that they can approve for collect calls. They will then phone the numbers to verify that it is ok that he call collect. I didnt know my husband had been transfered from Metro West till I received that call.

If he's calling collect it will have to be to a home land line number, you can't call a cell number collect. with a calling card (which can take quite a while to get set up, depending on how quickly he gets money in his account and how soon the date is for adding money to the card) he can call a cell.
