Default Has anyone expressed their dogs anal glands?

I am thinking about doing it myself, I've never done it so I do not know what to expect. The Youtube videos all show does that get it done regularly so doesn't help. I had an appt for my dog to get shots & that done, but they forgot to do it, so now I think I need to. He keeps licking himself, which he does when it needs to be done..

Advice or help would be great if anyones done this at home before!

I have to do my poodle at every bath.

This is gross, but if you squeeze both sides of the butthole (with thumb and middle finger) at the same time it should shoot out. Make sure you do it away from your face, because if they are full it is stinky and can be very messy.

OMG this is my worst post to date ...lmao

Good luck!

Peace~

So it can shoot, I wasn't sure .. good thing you said not to have my face too close. I would be the one trying to see what I am doing and end up with a nasty mess, that's about how my lucky is haha.

I wish the groomer did it then I wouldnt have this issue since he was just groomed 2 weeks ago ugh! lol.

also be aware that due to pressure the contents can shoot out with surprising force.

Well, that was a total fail he wouldn't even hold still. Guess I'll be taking him to the vet Thursday. I may see if they can show me how so I can do it myself. Poor guy, I heard it can be pretty uncomfrotable

Is that something that particular breeds need done? A friend has a Standard Fox Terrier that needed that done once, but the vet said to give him some oil couple of times a week and its not been needed to be done again. Just wondering if diet or something might reduce the need. Doesnt sound a very nice thing to do, or worse have it done to .....

All I've heard Is that smaller dogs usually do. I'm not sure if it has to do with diet or not. The vet never has mentioned that as the problem. :-/

I used to wash dogs for a dog groomer & we used to have to do it. It's pretty gross & yeah it does shoot. It's probably easier to just have the groomer do it.

edit... some dogs needed it more then others... not sure as to why

it's usually with smaller dogs..Is he a small dog? & I ended up going to the vet I attempted and failed lol. He does need it more often I think probably around every 2 months at least.. now he's itching too for no reason & the vet said his skin is pink and he is having hair loss where he keeps itching.. geez. crazy dog.

Another sign this needs to be done is when they start scooting acros the floor on their rearend. I have small dogs and they need this done regularly. I take them to the vet.

How often do you take them? I haven't figured out whats too often or not often enough yet. I didn't even know it was an issue with him until last year and he's about to be two in one month!

I get this done with my female everytime she gets her nails trimmed because they don't grow that fast. My male is not as bad so I only take him when he starts scooting.

Yeah, I usually wait until he acts like it's bothering him. Which is usually about every 3 months or so.. just depends. I just know it can be pretty painful, and cause infection if it goes too long..I always worry. This dog is like my child! lol..
