If he gets caught, you will lose all phone privileges...not worth the risk. Also, don't know how they got a cell approved cuz they are pretty thorough about their research. The address HAS to match the phone. Maybe it wasn't for Jersey? Good luck!

I live in Mississippi & the prisons here use GTL also & I had heard that an it was in the handbook as well but I was told that the handbooks needed to be updated. He calls me on my cell every other day. I think that all the prisons should allow inmates to call cells because a lot of people don't even have home phones anymore I know I don't.

I also agree however the state of new jersey does not. They are the ones who check that they are landlines, not GTL. I wish I could get rid of the house phone!!!

It is outrageous! Jersey is one of the most expensive states for inmates to make calls to their loved ones. If only the powers that be would understand how important it is to keep family contact to their successful release.........................

GTL is the only pre-paid phone service offered for NJDOC. Whenever my fiancé was as UC jail it was about $5.30 for the 15 minute conversation. I think the reason why it is so expensive for you is cause it is a different area code. If he will be there for an extended period of time you might want to look into changing your area code. I have become a pro with UC so if you have any questions PM. I will be more than willing to answer.

Please be sure to PM any ways that you come up with to save money on the phones. I am sure that there are people monitoring this site who will read what you are doing and find a way to block that from happening anymore! So save while you can, but keep it to yourself or share through PM's! Thanks luvmyluis for suggesting a PM to the poster.

Good luck!

Again, in New Jersey, you HAVE to use GTL and the calls are $5.30ish regardless of your area code or your state. It is that amount for ALL calls from the darling NJ DOC!

If the facility says no calls to a cell phone or calls only to a landline, we must follow those rules! If we don't, we can (and will) lose visitation privileges. The facilities have the technology to track and tape calls, and if we are not doing what the facility says, there are severe consequences. Services like googlevoice and conscallhome are often looked at as "third person calls" because they forward calls. Most DOCs don't allow call forwarding, so they are illegal too. I know it's expensive, but it was not worth it to me to risk losing visitation or even not allowing phone calls at all! Please don't do it if your loved one's facility says not to do it!!

beenthere2x, it depends on where your loved one is incarcerated and what that facility's rules are. I would suggest calling the facility and asking them. This thread is in the NJ Phones Forum, so people are trying to tell each other about NJ rules. I see that you are in WI, and the rules may be different there. I think it's always best to be safe rather than sorry, so a call from you to the facility to ask them seems prudent to me. The worst they can say is "no," right?! I wish you the best of luck!
